First post.....so be gentle with me...:)

Starting to do work on my newly acquired Hippo....2006 HSE Auto TD4
( I got this what I think was cheap )

Issues....Gearbox in limp mode.
You have a choice of forward gears...4th, 4th, 4th or 4th....reverse works fine.
The flashing F4 on the dash is probably trying to attract my attention to this.

Obvious host of various trivial issues,
Handle hanging of tailgate...normal apparently...easily fixable.
One passenger window not working...not bothered...

Sunroof non-working rusted...that will just stay shut...who uses them when you have aircon ;)
Aircon not working....:(...havent investigated yet.

Probably loads of others I haven't noticed yet.

Drove it 70 miles back home....seemed fine ( yes I know it was in limp mode but it was quite happy doing 60mph at 3,000 revs in 4th gear....it will be fine...)

First thing was checking Trouble Codes using my cheapo tester...(Autel AL539B )....which amazingly speaks to the Auto box ....although nothing else other than the Engine that I can see....will have to upgrade.

No engine codes but 2 codes for the gearbox.
P1605 - refer to LR manual ( since identified as EAT ECU Eeprom error flag set )
P1748 - refer to LR manual ( since identified 2-4 brake duty solenoid, Open circuit or short circuit to earth or battery )...I would guess this is the main culprit.
These codes didn't clear....although that may be my tester..

Also my tester said the 9 year old battery was only capable of 330CCA as opposed to the rated 620CCA so that's removed awaiting replacement.
Hopefully this may clear the P1605 error as the ECU will be reset.....maybe wishful thinking !

Next job is to test the resistances to the Solenoid ( as detailed on this brilliant site ) and pray for a wiring fault but if it is the solenoid it seems fairly straightforward to change.....famous last words..

Wish me luck

Kev

The 2/4 duty solenoid fault won't stop it shifting gear, it just causes the gear shifts to be very harsh.
However long term use with a 2/4 duty solenoid issue, can cause damage to the box internals, which can give the F4 (means fault, so only 4th is available, it's in limp mode), but go through all the solenoids to check resistance, and change any that are out of spec.

Ok I got the resistor measurements done.
Most of the reading were in the middle of the expected range.

As expected the Brake Duty Solenoid was showing open circuit.

However also showed Intermediate speed sensor as open circuit as well ?

Cant see any fault with the wiring.

I believe I have found the issue with the Intermediate Speed Sensor......it may not have one on this model (2006).
If that's so then great ....one less problem.

Anyone know where I can get a 2-4 Brake Duty Solenoid from ( without being robbed blind ) ?

From memory, a 2006 auto doesn't have the intermediate speed sensor.

I repaired my 2/4 duty solenoid, as there's a design fault where the connection just falls off the windings.

Just watched the video ( I assume its you ) showing that, well spotted.

Yeah that could possible explain it, completely open circuit, rather than normal short you would expect on a winding.

Will have a look when I get around to taking the cover off....

Ok finally got around to taking the solenoid cover off and checking the 2-4 brake duty solenoid.

Tested open-circuit so knackered.....

In process of replacing it and noticed on Rave it says........"Remove 21 bolts securing fluid pan to gearbox."

Mine only has 20....checked......and definitely only has 20

Half way through putting it back together and will see how it goes.

Fingers crossed....again

Got everything put back together and the F 4 fault has disappeared :)

Will take it for a spin tomorrow fingers and everything else crossed again.
