Thank you all for your advice it's very much appreciated.

It's a 1997 300tdi, as far as I know it's got the original axles, il have a look but I might just take it to the local 4x4 garage and ask them for all the parts I need. Saves me finding out half way through I've got the wrong parts. Il have a look at the sockets to see if if got some bi-hex, brother used to be a mechanic so I've got access to lots of top notch tools. He rarely has the time to help me out though, hence me asking advice here as I'm a complete novice, this job seems quite daunting to me as it's the biggest thing I'm going to try and do so far.
Il try and rope the other half in for pedal stomping duties, if she refuses I may take you up on that offer flat.

Mate sorry I was meaning that for kwakerman a as he is round my neck of the woods, I am in Brighton which is a bit far from Coventry lol

Thanks for the offer but even Brighton is still a fair slog. Worst comes to worst I would get SWMBO in the driving seat, she needs to learn a bit about engineering and that would be a easy starting point.

Was it you I said I would help with the engine if push came to shove?

So thought I'd have a crack at this today.......

First problem, couldn't get the copper pipe off the old caliper without breaking it as it was siezed on, every thing went well after that, fitted the new bearings and then I tried to fit the new caliper it wouldn't fit!!!!!
Brake disks are different aren't they...... Bugger!!
Didn't have a clue there were two different types with 10mm difference. so got to strip it all back down again to get the disk off and change it. Pretty much a day wasted other than the bearing change.

No they were both solid disks but the "bell" (not sure what it's actually called) part of the disk was 10mm shorter with a more square edge so the calipers were 10mm off from where they should of been.

sounds like a rear then ftc1381 fitted instead of frc7329 ,were there 5 small holes as well as the 5 large holes for securing to hub bolts

I've just checked and your spot on, School boy error on my part I put the rear disk on the front! You can definitely tell I'm an absolute amateur! Thanks James.

no problem, easy mistake to make, the extra holes are for rear abs reluctor rings if fitted ,which since the same discs fit range rover classic and disco ,often are
