Changing Back Bumper on 90 1994

How easy is it to change the back bumper on my 90
The reason for changing it was replaced with light
gauge Material and when you try and Jack up
to change wheel the bumper just bends

How do I know when I go and buy a new bumper
that it is the correct one i.e. the thicker Material

Where can I buy Cheers Thanks
 
You mean the rear corssmember section?

Cut it off and the new one welds one, costs about £100 from paddocks, needs to be welded well as its obviously where tow hitches etc bolt on!
 
Sorry you lot yes mean rear cross member
if it needs welding & £100 will have to think
about that now not high on my to do list

I've just had mine replaced, I'll go measure it in a minute. What are you jacking the car up with? If it's a Hi-lift don't jack on the rear cross member ;)
 
Including whatever its been painted/undersealed with it's 6.2mm - the paint/underseal looks pretty thick so I'd reckon 5mm is the bare crossmember.
 
No its the original Land Rover jack
that goes in the hole in cross member

Now I am just wondering if the cross
member has been welded as I have not
seen a welded one maybe someone
can put me image on then I can check
in the morning maybe thats why the
cross member was bending ??

BTW the cross member was changed before
I bought Defender it ............

Sincerely hope your rear crossmember has been welded on!

Welds should be clearly visible around the 'sleeves' that fit over the end sections of the chassis rails.

Either we're all talking at cross porpoises here or...........er, I dunno.

Got sum pics of the rear X-member o' yours?
 
OK had a look under the back if you look
at the side of the channel in the 1st pic
the Channel that makes up the cross
member ie the back of the channel the
heal is 2.5mm thick but the rest of the
legs of the channel look like the have
another bit of steel in the flanges
making it upto 5mm thick ??

I can understand now why its bending
when the jack is inserted in the hole
the part that taking all the strain is just
2.5mm if it was 5mm then all would be well

Why would anyone put in 2.5 instead of 5
and why do they make 2.5mm anyway ??
 
shopw us a pic of the back of your landy and the hole , that cross member looks solid enough to me.
 
to be fair mate i think your best option is to buy a bottle jack to lift the car from under the axle and lots of wax oil to try and stop your cross member from rusting any further.
i recon its down to the metal being corroded , a naff after market cross member or fairies, either way you cant jack it up from there.
you could try welding a patch on it but a bottle jack would be cheaper.
defo wax oil it though.
 
Mine looks a bit different to that - I'll get some photo's in the light tomorrow. Nobber might be right about it being a pattern part - or possibly you've busted/corroded a spot weld on it somewhere.
