hi guys.

im wondering if anyone has had the experience of changing a transfer box?

reason im asking as some of you may have seen in a previous thread i found that my viscous coupler is knackered so i decided to buy a second hand one on flee bay. so is it easier to swap boxes? i assume to change the viscous coupler ill still have to drop the box?

Not that I've tried it, but looking at RAVE and the BG t/box overhaul manual, I reckon you should be able to do it without taking the t/box out. It should be a matter of dropping the front prop, then there's a cover over the VCU which should unbolt. It should then be case of removing the drive flange and withdrawing the VCU, and replacing with the new one, although I wouldn't like to say how easy it will be to get it off, whether it will just slide or need a bit of help!

I have done the rear seal on my transfer box,
involved dropping the prop

just make sure you mark the ends and flanges so that the prop goes on where it came off

Re transfer box change, it doesn't look to bad when it ws on the ramp.

If you have a ramp or access to one i reckon you will be ok.

on the floor could be emotional>>!!

Good luck

i looked on RAVE under transfer box and didnt see how to remove or refit, what section did you look under?
RAVE doesn't actually give a procedure for doing it, but if you study the diagrams, in conjunction with the ones from the BorgWarner Overhaul Manual (also buried down the list in the RR section of RAVE), the way the VCU fits in the t/box becomes apparant, and you can see how it could be done. I suspect RAVE doesn't give one cause LR would just say the whole box needed replacing, or mechanics would use the Overhaul Manual as a guide.

right-e-ho... don't have that symptom.

Mine slaps into second and first on the change down and I have what I thought to be an unrelated issue of strong vibration (jerking) at tick-over or very light throttle when moving very very slowly. As I am getting closer to the issue being something connected with the transfer box I'm starting to think that they are connected... I hope its the Transfer box and not the main gearbox. (Auto) which bring me to ask as many people as I can now regrading symptoms of transfer box and auxiliary part replacements.

To check the VCU, jack one front wheel up off the ground, it should be just possible to turn the wheel with a great deal of effort. If it is impossible to turn the wheel the VCU has seized. It will eventially knacker a diff due to transmission wind up if it is seized. It also causes jerking at low speed when turning on grippy surfaces.

Just a long shot... but is there anyone in North Wales (Anglesey) who could be bribed into having a look to diagnose the problem with some bear, coffee, biscuits and a bacon butty?

You may get a few takes if you agree to keep the bear in it's cage.:D:D:D

Wooppss!... lol Oh well... I'll have to sacrifice one of the wife's teddy bears then wont I to stay true to the offer.

I'll pick the most soppy one with a plaque that says "Fix me"
