Can anybody give me a rough idea of how much it will cost to change a gearbox in a 300tdi, assuming a labour rate of about £50 per hour?

I bought a Defender from a dealer recently and it has gearbox issues, the dealer has offered to change it for a recon one, but they are not local and l'd rather them ship it to my local indy and get them to fit it.

But the guy who knows how much it costs is not in today, and l need some idea. How many hours work is it?

The missus says if we have to take it back again (a full day's travelling, twice) she doesn't want it back....

Apart from the gearbox issues (hard to engage first when stationary and won't engage reverse unless you put it in third, then reverse) lt is a really nice Landy.

I don't mind spending a bit of cash on it, l expected to on a 17 year old Defender. I have had a few older cars. When l had my 1990 Ferrari Mondial t it was costing me £500 per MONTH. And my 1989 Porsche 928 S4 cost me £3,000 in eight months.

Not as bad as the poor sod who owned the Porsche before me though, he had it 18 months and spent £11,500 lol

Did you buy it form a used car dealer or from a Landy Dealer who sold you a trade in?

I would call a Landy dealer and ask whats the book time to change the gearbox and take it from there.

Try looking at Ashcroft transmission site.

Ashcroft Transmissions

Under fitting service it says
Fitting Service

We are able to offer a same-day fitting service. This price is all-inclusive and includes a remanufactured unit, 3 piece Borg and Beck or Valeo clutch kit (and fork on the 200 and 300 TDi's) oil, removal and refit, vat and free use of a courtesy car. An input gear is included in the Tdi and the V8 prices but not the Td5 as it is not subject to wear as it is cross-drilled as standard in these vehicles. We supply a cross drilled input gear in most cases but are unable to do so if you have a suffix A or B transfer box.

Tdi vehicles £1,095

V8 vehicles £1,122

Td5 vehicles £1,080

That should give you an idea BUT take it back to the dealer!!!

a days work 8hrs

Thanks for the replies.
A bigger job than l thought then.

An update....my local indy now says they will look at the one that's in first, as they may be able to repair it

The dealer only offered to fit a good used one, not a recon. I am fine with that as long as it works, but you'd have to fit it to find out.

ah right, yeah local garage fixing it is probably wiser. if the dealer is footing the bill, then they are less likely to scrimp
