Just come up against a bit of a problem, fitted a alternator to recent resto, and need a bit of help sorting the wiring out as most are the same colour , the voltage regulator was allready removed, so i have a bunch of wires left hanging, so far i have connected brown wire from alternator up to the battery side of starter switch (push button ), any idea,s i seem to remember that this has been covered before but can't seem to bring it up, ps its a 1961 series 2a,

yes i know that, its what to do with the rest of the old wiring, as stated the voltage regulater has been taken off so just a bunch of wires ,mostly not colour coded

The wires are FADE - Field,Ammeter, Dynamo, Earth so you can work out what goes where from the order. Google a pic of the voltage regualtor and it will make sense as the letters are on the lid. There is no "field" on the alternator and you don't need the earth, Ammeter goes to the alternator output and the dynamo is gone so you don't need that. You can use the field wire to connect up to the ign light, saves running a new wire.

thanks Rob, do you know what the two spades on the origanal starter solenoid ( push one ) are for, i thought they are the power to the fuse box etc, dont know havn't tried them yet, thanks Pete

There are several spades on the solenoid. Look closley at where they are. There should be one large (5/16) and perhaps one small on the same bolt as the lead to the battery. The large is the feed to/from the batterys and you can leave this to A on the regulator connections and connect the alterntor to this, it makes the wriing simpler and shortens the connection between the battery and alternator. The small one on the same terminal goes to things that are not fused, could be the ignition if its an old set up. The logic being you don't want to break down just because a fuse has gone. The other small (1/4) spade that is not connected to the battery should be the one that pulls in the solenoid. You may have a wire from that to the coil to by-pass a balast resistor if you have one. I can't recall where the solenoid earths, I'll look.

Hi again Steve, i just found it a d i have viewed it, but it doesn't help me, problem i have got is the regulater had been removed before i got it, and i am left with a bunch of wires and there is no colour coding, its going to be a nightmare

Hi does this help , you could also private message landyman

You should be able to work back, the ammeter wire will be thick, the charging light will come from the speedo, you can connect it to the field wire and the charging light on the alternator. The field and dynamo wires both run to teh dynamo (or where it was) and you can use the dymano wire as the altertnator feed to the wire to the ammeter. work of a moment....
