Hi Guys

Im after a bit of advice on the wiring loom for the alternator mine was running down the side of the engine next to the Diesel Injector Pump and then through the engine block (below the Thermostat housing and behind the water pump to the alternator. Safe to say it's melted through lucky I caught it before anything caught fire.

Can anyone share any pics of the correct location to route the loom to the Alternator and Starter Soliniod, please (I now have a new Auto Sparks loom with the 2x Brown, One Water Temp, Alternator Plug and Oil Pressure Switch.

Recon that is the original way you have, on my series 3 now alternator wires go straight to starter being careful to avoid/keep away from exhaust. Get some split conduit to cover likely damaged areas.
 
Yours was in the correct location. There shouldn’t be anything approaching the temperature needed to melt a loom on that rout.

Errm maybe it was a loose wire or something else this is what it looks like.

I’d go for a short before looking at heat.
There should be P clips right round the rout but it does touch the cylinder head between them.
Yeah there was a p clip either side of the water pump on the timing case holding the loom, only reason I found it was because I jumped in it to start it and it clicked like the solinoid was stuck, after hitting it with a hammer and no difference I start wiggling the wires and then a load of smoke and sparks came from the water pump area and then after abit more investigation I found that.

Think there should be a couple down the side anorl near the injectors.
Pain in the arris when your adjusting the pump the loom always gets in the way of the rear nut 😳

The old wiring gets a bit green on the inside when it's that ancient, this gives a rise in resistance and heat builds, a side effect of Lucas, God of Darkness ...
 
Old brittle cable sheathe, corrosion running down the copper stands, etc, etc.

Replace, same route, use an outer sheathe, and seal the connectors with heat shrink over silicone grease.
