change of engine

What would be a good cheap engine and gearbox for a series 3 88 inch 1972? I ask because my mates petrol 2/4 is knocking and the gears are jumping out of 2nd and 3rd. Knocking is from the bottom of the engine he says, i have not heard it. It is a lovely looking machine otherwise.

cheapest would be to replace what you have already fitting a later 5 speed box is possible but costly and tdi conversions are doable but not for under the £500 in parts
