The central locking on my 300 tdi has developed a problem that doesn't seem to be quite the same as the various ones that searches throw up.

Having worked fine, a few months ago it developed an intermittent habit of locking in response to the (2 button) fob, but immediately unlocking with associated flashing of the hazard lights as though a door/window/bonnet was open; the alarm sets fine. The problem occurred increasingly often and is now permanent. In every case, locking using the key in the drivers door lock causes all doors to lock and Stay locked with the alarm set. The system always unlocks fine using the fob.

For unrelated reasons, I have changed the lock spring on both rear doors and the tailgate, but this doesn't seem to be related to the problem. The front doors don't show any of the usual symptoms of lock spring problems.

I have tried adjusting the position of the actuator in the drivers door, but it doesn't help. I'm not sure if it's right but, when removed from the door frame, the driver's door actuator operates with the slightest knock.

Is a replacement actuator likely to be the problem or should I look elsewhere? I'll be honest, I'm not enthusiastic about taking off the door glass to change the driver's door lock spring just in case.

It's the actuator what has had it. I replaced my spring in the door mech and starting doing the same as you state. Replaced my actuator and everything is fine now apart from the door won't open with the handle from outside :(
