I can only think it must be a battery problem, lights or radio left on?. sounds strange to just not start. but then again it is a freelander and they do these things to test us

I agree that knackered batteries can show themselves in the strangest of ways!
You don't mention trying a spare fob as this would possibly eliminate the fob as a root cause.
You can defeat the immobiliser by turning the drivers door lock with the key a set number of times, the proceedure is in the handbook, never tried it myself.

Do any electrics on the car work as the alarm may be fitted with the battery backed up siren? Check fuses in engine bay fuse box.

got a similar problem just now, if the cars unlocked and left sitting i have to use the fob to turn the immobiliser off
despite the car never being locked. also if anyone has info on the key trick then please post it as i don't have the handbook for my landy

On early cars the immobiliser timed out if not started after unlocking so its not a fault. The key code is put in through the drivers door lock but each car has its own code.If you dont have the code ,get it from main dealer.Hand books are always on fleabay.

Don't know if this might be of any use.... replaced my fob a few months ago: when ignition is in the "on" position, the fob sends a signal to the car and the red light in the instrument panel should go off and the car will start. I coudn't unlock any of the other doors either when it happened to me- not even with the unlock switch inside the car. To get the code- take your VIN # to a LR dealer and they will give you the code. Be sure to do it right as there is a time delay everytime you put in the wrong code. Hope it helps...
