Can someone explain to me how the disco 1 central locking system works! My solonoids just seem to only go one way and thus causing issues.

Drivers door is the master the other four are slaves therefore will do whatever the master does, normally.
C-locking is controled via an ECU and can be activated remotely or by the key in the drivers door lock.
I don't understand "My solonoids just seem to only go one way" so

Well I've taken a solenoid apart but can't see how it works.
It slides one way. It looks like it should go one way to lock and opposite to unlock.
It's like it's popped all the solenoids in the land rover too far.
I've check the master switch. That works.

The actuator rod pulls or pushes ie the motor spins in both directions, there a fine line for it to do both locking/unlocking, so undo four screws on the plate and move only a mm or two one way or the other while locking/unlocking when u get it right tighten the screws, job done.:)

where is the central locking ecu on a 300 ? my has failed altogether since it went for a splash at yarwell.

It's probably the black unit.
Remove the footwell cover. On the left you will see black unit with 2 plugs. 1 black and 1 white.
