Hi all,

New to the forum and new to land rovers, I've just bought a 1998 freelander and the previous owner said that you can lock it with the remote fob but you have to unlock it with a key as the fob doesn't unlock the car also the locking switch on the dash does nothing what could be the cause of this issue?

Also the hill decent light is on all the time I'm told the 2 switches for the hill decent have been tested and working and can be heard clicking when you press the button on the gear stick.

Thanks for any replies In advance.

I would imagine that the fob either needs a new battery or the open button is defunct. and the hill decent either one of the switches ? is faulty from memory I though there was only one

My drivers door will NOT unlock with the fob but WILL lock fine....passenger side etc all unlock/lock fine...battery was changed/spare fob tried but still the same...always thought this meant that the actual door unlock mechanism was faulty  Just got used to having to use my key to unlock my door....

That's what this one is doing pretty much the tailgate unlocks with the remote but the passenger and drives doors don't. And don't lock or unlock from the button on the dash

Also passenger door doesn't unlock when I unlock the drivers door with the key have to do it manually

been thinking could this problem be caused by the locking switch on the dash being faulty as this button when pressed does nothing at all doesn't even click a relay, are these prone to malfunction/?

Yep I had the same problem and had to use the key to unlock the drivers door, this was ok until the lock barrel its self became temperamental so I was forced to buy a new central locking actuator, I went for a new one from Land Rover in the end. It solved the problem with the locking and unlocking using the key fob.

Its a miracle that the wires are still connected to the switch on the gearstick! I don't think the switch has anything to to with it, cos the wires always break away from it and that doesn't raise the HD light.

The brake peddle sensor might be a different matter though.

its only the HDL that is on not the ABS or anything

I'll try replacing the switch on the dash for the locking if thst don't work ill get replacement actuators for the drivers and passenger doors
