Hi. Just a quick question about the center diff...
Mine is knackered (at least we think so - so going to be looked at next week). Anyway, so what ive been doing is looking around to see how much i can pick one up for. I have a 1998 300tdi 90. Is the center diff in mine a standard 2 pin? Ashcroft sell fully rebuilt ones for around £245. Is this my best bet if it is buggered?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Chris

probably get a perfectly good one out of a rotted disco they generally dont do a lot of hard work in them . JMHO

I thought the transmission diffs were 4 pin and the axle diffs were 2 pin..

Just something I heard someone saying, I don't actually know myself, just thought I'd throw it in and let the others comment

the only similarity between the centre diff and the other two diffs in axles is the word diff . It is a totally different item . If it is acentre diff fault then you need another out of a lt230 transfer box . You will need to await your strip down . What makes you think your centre diff is the problem , they very rarely give problems .

Oh right. Im guessing that its going to be mega money then as its different...:s
We think its the center diff as there is seriously bad backlash in the trans but we've checked everything else it could possibly be! Going to check all other things again though on thurs just to be sure before we drop the transfer box out.

Before you drop your transfer box, put main box in 4th (direct gear) , remove cover (round plate) on rear face at top and check for wear between output gear and the splined shaft it is on (common wear problem) also lot of backlash can be generated on gear train in transfer box, not mainly in diff .
You can probably get a good s/h unit (Whole transfer box) out of a disco and get a high ratio increase as well if you want for a lot less than buying a rebuilt transfer box (about £450) .
