Disco 1 carpets,

hi, my carpts are soaking wet in the front, i cant see a leak, do people remove the carpets and replace them with chequer plate or something? shame the carpet seems to go up under the centre console etc so i cant just take the floor bit out? need to do something before it turns it rotton

If you just plate it, there is a danger that the water will just fester under the plate, and rot things anyhow.

I have the same issue in the back of our D1. Alpine windows leak...

was thinking ofr a really good thick underseal layer in between and maybe clipping it in so it can be removed easy, but wonder what others have tone as road noise will be much worse etc

carpets out , yes they leak but with the carpets out it will dry and you can see water if its present

so do people cut them out or take the whole lot out because it seems to all be one piece going from the floor all the way up under the gearstick

blimey that's a bit of a drastic amount of work, then what do you do with the bare transmission tunnel etc, i expect it looks rather crap!?

Leave the carpets in but get rid of the thick layer of sponge underlay/sound absorbing mat - it just holds water. The carpet is pretty good for not holding water especially if there is a small drain hole or two in the floor. Drill a couple, rustproof the whole floorpan and put the carpet back. It looks better than c-plate and keeps a bit of noise out. Don't forget to check it from time to time.

Sure is I only read post #5, didn't see the ones before. I removed the carpet to weld up the floor and put it back afterwards.
Made a bit of an Arthur Hunt of this thread. I'm away to find my glasses now, no doubt I'll find them later on the top of my head

will it pass an mot with holes drilled? I tried to pull the thick **** out but it wouldn't budge is it fixed to something?

I removed mine and fitted the proper discovery mats in to it.take up majority of the room the carpet covered and will reveal all the holes you have

Yep, when I bought my D1 Disco it had the drains from the A/C blocked and constantly soaking the floors, I removed all the underlay/sound deadening stuff in each footwell back to the intersection point with the tranny tunnel and just laid the carpet back onto the bare, (and thankfully not rusted into holes) metal floor, I think it allows a bit more road noise in but is acceptable for an old 4WD. Now if the carpet gets wet, like when I do deep water crossings, it is simple to just place something under the carpet to allow air to circulate and dry it in a reasonable time.

i got it out doday and dried it out in the wind, sound foam can stay out, found lots of patches welded in my floor! thought this was a solid one but not so sure now, the drivers floor has a few small holes so don't know if that's an mot fail or not but its draining the rain!! I have no idea where it's coming in from, very frustrating, I wish you could buy a liquid leak finder that you pour over the car and it finds leaks and fills it!! radweld for rain leaks!! maybe i'll melt some perolium jelly and pour it down the windscreen and it might set in the holes!!!
