Not really as the the amount of juice your going to need to make the winch working well is going to be highter than the leisure battery can give.

this in turn will give you poor performance of the winch and damage/limit the life of the battery.
Better to have a high CCA rate type battery, like a red top or even a truck type battery

It's all down to capacity of the electrical system. no matter how good your system is using a winch or something that takes high amounts of current will drain your battery.
I would always use a second battery when using a winch to make sure you don't run out of juice when your in the middle of a pull.
And by using a second battery you will take some of the strain off your alternator too:ballchain:

so i need to get a split charge then? and a seperate battery and wire my winch to aux battery? if so what battery and battery tray?

So would my standard battery fitted with a 6hp 12,000 winch be ok on my alternator is 110amp? Its a discovery 2 Thanks Dan.

I used to run my 6hp 12,000lb winch on my 300tdi. It struggled a bit without twin batteries. I now run it on my TD5 with just a single truck battery. It's fine. If you were winching long enough to flatten your battery then you would also be overheating your winch motor so would still need to stop. Try it as you are and see how it goes. If you feel it is struggling you can always add another battery later.

that sounds good i would only be using my winch if i get stuck that would be all not like winch challenges or anything, What truck battery you using RATTY? Does it fit in the standard disco 2 battery tray?

I don't know off the top of my head what one it is. I don't think it'll fit your tray though. You might wanna measure your tray and buy one that just fits.

where from? would an optima yellow top be ok?

Mine was an ex electricity board vehicle. The battery came with it. I prefer twin battery setups but there isn't room for the second battery with the one thats fitted. I have the second battery from my last vehicle sat at home still. I have heard mixed reviews about optima's.

Go to your local farmer/equine suppliers. They will usually have the best priced batteries. Tractor batteries are the same sizes as truck batteries and are usually much cheaper than your normal halfords type supplier.;)

If you wire 100's of these together in series-paraelle you might be ok....
