Car wash??

i think she's more worried about the hippo being made of water soluble components rather than the physical size of it
Is it really that bad?? am i going to be getting my moneys worth from the RAC or will it just break and i'll be using shanks pony to get around?
The 1.8 engine is notoriously bad for head gasket failures but, that aside, they're not a bad car and far more competent off road than the rusty bulkhead boys make out. Just a shame more people can't see that they're a great entry point into Land Rover ownership and be a bit more supportive
If it's a 3dr hardback, the manual specifically says that you shouldn't use a car wash. I'd assume this is probably due to the force placed on the removable section by the rollers.
If it's a 5 door, the only issue you might have is that you'll need to remove the aerial before use, which may cause a problem if you can't reach it?

1) yes it will go through a car wash
2) its a long standing joke on here that freelander (hippoo) doors fall off when they get wet
3) the 1.8 K series engine is unbelievably bad and renowned for repeat HGF( Head Gasket Failure)
4) the Hippoo is about the worst possible Land rover and known for breaking almost every bit of the drive train, needs to be serviced by a main dealer (very expensive) unless you know a considerable amount about car maintenance.
5) if yu must have a hippoo and not a Disco - get a Doozil one.

It's a 3dr, so i guess i'll be paying the ridiculously tall teenage boy down the street to wash it for me. Either that or invest in a step ladder.
It just had the head gasket replaced before i brought it, according to the paperwork that came with it so keep your fingers crossed for me!!

Unfortunately, HG replacement isn't any real firm guarantee that the problem won't return. It seems like 75% of cars suffer the failure, and those that do seem to experience it repeatedly.
A few things to make sure of, to minimise the risk:
1) Make sure the car has the remote thermostat modification fitted.
2) Make sure that the water in the rad has sufficient antifreeze in it (more for the coolant effect than anything).
3) Make sure that, if the cooling system is drained or gets low at any stage, that the system is properly bled after being refilled, as trapped air pockets are one suspected cause of HG failure.

You know i've heard that of rovers in general, that the head gasket is always the first thing to go. They asked me about it when i sold my MG, luckily i'd not had any trouble with it. Not that i actually know what a head gasket is or what it does.
For those of you who think i am just winding you up, sorry and all that but i thought i'd take the initiative and ask people who know what they are talking about, rather than just give it a shot and end up with a crushed roof with screaming kids in the back.

Ignore them Lynsey, the tractor boys are so used to dismantling the meccano set that are all other landrovers that your question had them gobsmacked!
The TD4 diesel engine is the better engine to go for. The 1.8 petrol desperately needs the thermostat upgrade stated. Other than that the Hippo is decent motor and doesnt rust as much as the other LR's

Ignore them lynsey,i do,i have a 3dr hippo,i dont take it in the carwash....not because the doors fall off when wet cos they dont,i dont take mine through because i get someone else to wash it ROFL,that and i do worry that the hardback could leak,im sure it wouldnt but just to be safe,i mean its not leaked on the wettest of days,but you never know.
Ive learnt alot here mainly i browse,as im hardly the most knowleged hippo owner,but ive had some good advice given here and so far this lot have stood me well,:welcome2: aboard.
