car transporter trailer recomendations?

I have used a few from single axle folding jobbie to this 3.5t tilt bed plate trailer,

My dad had a Brian James twin axle trailer but it was light weight and could not carry a 90 as it wasn't plated great enough,

My friends recovery transit weighs 2.2tons empty and thats a crew cab with 6 seats! I see some real flimsy looking single cabs around and bet they weigh hardly anything!

I'd get twin axle if you ever need to push it about to store or anything because them tri axles are impossible to push! The twins hard enough
 
At between £1000 and £2000 for a good cond twin axle Brian James - that is a lot of outlay for beer money :confused:

The cost of civi recovery is ridiculous. Lads at work get charged 350 quid to collect and drop off no more than 50 miles. 120 quid for local recovery/ delivery. Folk may ask for assistance or lend the trailer for tokens!:rolleyes: just thought i'd throw it out there...yeah its a large outlaw but I have borrowed trailers on a few occasions so why not own one.
 
Did you ask if he had a tachograph and operators licence before you gave him the job

If he didn't none of it was insured plus the lot could have been confiscated by VOSA

There's loads on eBay who think hitching a trailer up to their SD&P insured 4x4 and driving off is all they need

My 4x4 insurance used to specifically exclude motor-trade use. Fortunately, driving to my place of work - a garage - didn't count!
Is quite common to see VOSA pulling all sorts of vehicles with trailers.
 
Lads just to confirm I aint doing this for a living, just asking for advice and direction. I have a day job but if someone asks for a hand I'd help them, currently have a MK1 VW camper loaded on Ifor Williams trailer in my hanger ready to drop off tomorrow. Hopefully weather behaves and i'll shift it the morrow. Need a 2 pin slider for Dixon hitch though , to much rattling for my liking!:( wea a single pin.
 
All I'm saying is VOSA are everywhere now , if they see you towing a trailer they're likely to stop you, as soon as they find out what's on the back isn't registered in your name they won't let go.

An example of how they're different to going through the courts

A guy delivering at work told me what happened to him a few months ago

he'd done his 10 hours driving, was about 20 mins from home with 50k worth of whiskey

He rang the boss, who told him to bring it in as it'd be gone if they parked it up overnight

They emailed the tachograph records to VOSA , few days later they get a phone call asking why a driver is 27mins over his 10 hours

They explain, high value load, unsafe parking

A week letter they get a letter which ends up with a fine , £100 a minute, £2,700

I see where you are coming from wanting a trailer. I have been looking for one to buy but cant justify getting one, I have always been able to borrow one if needed but will need one soon. I have always made sure I have had non commercial towing on my insurance so the trailer and load is insured as long as I am not being paid to tow anything.

I know what you mean with the hitch. I don't have one on mine but can't you drill the hitch plate to make it double pin?

A dual purpose vehicle is exempt from O licence ;)

NFU used to insure my landy fully comp for business and pleasure including for mine and the missus's listed occupations 'except for use in the motor trade'.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::p

Reference the hitch, they way its been drilled would require me to drill to close to the edge to place a further hole onto it. For the sack of 40 quid i'll get one predrilled ready to fit. I,m not getting paid to move anything, favour for a friend who can buy me a beer in the mess sometime!:rolleyes:.

when I move vehicles or help folk out I allways travel with them so they can see what I,m doing plus give me a hand, I,m a big lad but sometimes 2 hands make light work. If I was traveling some distance I would require them to bring their docs just incase.

I,m fully insured for business (requirement for claiming money back at work?) and for pleasure. :)

Defenders and discos may be plated to tow 3.5t but I don't care what anybody says it's not safe

Last week at knutsford there was a disco on the hard shoulder with a bent tow bar, caved in OS rear wing , 50m up the motorway was a trailer upside down with a piece of farm machinery spread all over the hard shoulder

3.5t means at 20mph between farms not doing 75 on the M6

The way they work out the towing capacity is if the vehicle can do a standing start on a 12% gradient, it you look in land rover hand books they all tell you to do hill starts in LOW range then change to high range when the road is level. I agree they are not safe fully laden, I used to tow with a Foretrak which was plated at 3.5ton, with 2.5ton behind it was all over the road. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to do the max speed of 60mph with 3.5ton behind.

ma rover wouldn't do 75 unladen let alone laden!:D

As for towing I'm plated up to 120 ton gross, (not in ma 110). i'm forever recovering wolfs with penman trailers that have flipped due to excessive speed so well aware of the un-stability of these things.
