Are they all the same size  I know they have different surrounds but I'm not interested in those.

The one in my Landy doesn't work and I though I might put a new one in. Its just in a black box fastened on in front of the bonnet catch.

If its easy and just a case of unfastening the old one and the new one will just go in, I might try it myself.

Dont want to make a mess and then find the new one wont go in

nowadays they are all one size, unless it is a built in factory fitted one.in your landy it is a standard single din size.

Standard type radios are all the same size DIN fitting...there is double size etc but what you describe is the standard size I reckon...

Just go get 1 off the shelf from halfrauds etc and it should go right in.....

Wiring on the other hand may be another question !

Actually my Landy doesn't seem too bad with wires, they are actually different colours and so far, even the right colours :D

My old defender had been rewired entirely using black wire

ok,if you buy a basic radio etc then there will only be a few wires anyway, plus there will be a wiring diagram with it to follow.just dont disconnect your old one until you have checked the wiring.also disconnect the battery before you do anything.

Wont that make all my electronics go wrong

As the others have said, the size is now standard called DIN; 2 x 7 inches. Double DIN is 4 x 7 inches. They come with a cradle which is permanently fitted to the vehicle and into which the radio head unit is slipped. Catches secure it so that it can't be removed without the correct keys. (Doesn't apply when the local riff-raff is about)

Wiring for all car radio head units is also, or should be standardised to ISO specs, so installing shouldn't present too many problems. Wiring for the aerial and speakers is usually correct, but there might be a problem with the permanent and switched 12 volt supplies.

we are talking about a tratter here so i dont think iso connectors are relevant.lol.

Point taken, but the new radio will have ISO plugs and sockets on it. at least there'll be a wiring diagram too.

I was hoping it would have plugs on the end of the wires so I could just uplug the old one and the new one would fit in the same.

Wishful thinking probably.

the new one probably will, but it depends on what or how your old one has been wired in.

Dont think it has been in for that long, certainly not from new. When nrgserv put the CB in he found radio wiring somewhere else on the dash to use. So I guess it originally had one somewhere else.

Dont know what idiot thought moving it to be in the way of the bonnet catch was a good idea though

if it has been moved then i bet the wiring has been chopped up as well.
