hi folks , i am new to this forum and also new to landrovers
i am to not clever with spaners either ,
i bought a 1980 lwb landrover its been fitted with a viteese v8 many years ago,
the prbblem is i cannot get 4wd , the yellow nob seems to go up and down fine , but when i put all 4wheels off the ground (on stands) and tried again
only the 2 rear wheels turned , i also noticed at the back of gear box where the speedo cable goes in ,there is a shaft digging into the speedo cable ,(it has been chewing the cable up at some point,)
i lifted the seats up so i could look down at gear box while trying to change gear and i dont see that shaft moving
.
if anyone has a clue what i am talking about could you please help me with what to do next,

thanks

If I was up in Ayrshire still I'da offered a hand, I'd assume its just not engaging so might be some crap in the top of the box. If you mean all 4 wheels don't drive then no they shouldn't anyway. You should have one on the front and one on the rear turning as you're running open diffs not lockers or LSD's

check front prop is turning when all 4 wheels are off the ground ,both props should turn but as mr evil said only one wheel front and back need to ,if front prop doesnt turn when back one does 4wd isnt been engaged ,most likely shafts where they come out off front housing sticking 2 are behind tin cover ,if front prop does turn ,some thing in axle isnt transmitting drive ,free wheeling hubs not locked ,half shaft bust ,diff ,etc

Hi , i have lifted the floor pans lifted all wheels up from ground , the front prop does not turn at all , the red lever seems to do everything ok, and the yellow nob seems to push down and pull up ok to , but the prop will still not turn
thanks

hi , thanks for reply , she seems too go into low box ok

so its not going in 4wd ,which i presume you know can be selected by pulling red lever back into low( low is permanent 4wd )or by leaving red lever were it is in high and pushing yellow knob down (hi can be 3wd or 4wd)to select 2wd againg (pop yellow knob up)you just select low then back to high ,either pivot has come adrift inside front output housing (gearbox needs removing to pull housing off and reset)or shafts are sticking in housing

Your pic has broken...

But if that shaft in the gearbox is poking out too far you'll need to tap it back in with a hammer and lock it in place. There is a groove about 1/8" wide about 1/4" from the end.

That groove should be outside of and flush with the case of the trasnfer gearbox.

There is supposed to be a little metal tab (part no 217484) that sits in there that is bolted to the case of the gearbox to hold it in place.

Mine ended up doing like yours but I tapped it back in and it doesn't seem to have suffered any lasting damage...

hi
the little metal tab is still there ,looks like a 13mm nut and a funny shaped washer,
can this be hit back in with a hammer wwile gear box is still in landrover?
and do you think this is the problem with no 4wd ? landrover is jacked up and i can turn front prop with my hands when in neutral and front whhels turn,

thanks to all for quick replys and usefull info,

Oops, just the other posts properly.
That shaft should be tapped back in and the rectangular washer should engage with the outer slot.

Could this cause lack of 4wd?

I don't think that would lose you 4wd but if it came out further you might lose all the gears off the shaft into the transfer case....

Your 4wd problem sounds more like the selector in the fron casing is playing up. I think you have to take the whole lot out to fix that but I've never played with that end so not sure...

thanks for info springdon ,, today i am trying to remove the seat box etc etc , give it a power wash then i think i will call in a favour from a mechanic friend of mine , i noticed that the bracket holding gear box up `can be un bolted and dropped for easier romoval of box, every nut and bolt i am trying to undo are rusted soild` and already cut two knuckles and also managed to drop a pair off vise grips straight into my left eye , while lyin underneath , (completely blood shot ) ,anyway spk soon cheers

If you mean that the cross member can be unbolted, that's a big bonus (and means a military chassis).
The rusted fasteners mean every thing takes 10 times longer than you think. I've given up trying to undo anything that the angle grinder can get to. Less danger of slip injuries and you get to put back nice shiney clean bolts :).
