cannot select 5th gear

Hi everybody new to the site need some advice. I have 1997 110 300 tdi which has done 148,000 miles R380 Gearbox not the the uprated one all standard apart from I changed the pulleys and cambelt for the shoulderred type last year. I use it for the dogs and shooting. I lent it to my cousin for a few months who does landscape gardening when he was without a vehicle, big mistake its has come back in a condition of not being able to select 5 gear he says he took it to a landrover garage and they say it needs a knew gbox. I have my doubts as all other gears and transfer box work fine just 5th
Any ideas I read some stuff about the finger guide playing up. Is there anything I can do to pinpoint problem. I don`t really want to change box would rather rebuild to keep original. Any help greatly appreciated.
 
Yeah no problem 1-4 fine and reverse I have driven it for a week or so now with no untoward noises or problems just cannot select 5th
 
5th and reverse share the layshaft, if you've just lost 5th it'll probably be the front bearing or baulk ring

box out time
 
When I say I cannot select 5th gear I do mean I cannot even get the selector to move even at standstill and engine off.
 
I have got the landrover gearbox service manual is it much of a job to replace front bearing or baulk ring?

if your not sure how big a job it is it then might not be a good idea for you to be doing it - but everyone has to start somewhere :)

if you've got the manual have a read up about the detent/spring selectors

ashcrofts do a kinda drive through exchange thing if you dont fancy DIYing
 
Thanks for all your help Sean will have read up tomorrow, Sorry what I meant was if im dropping out the box I would guess its worth overhauling complete not just fixing problem, Gotta machine to finish designing tonight for a customer.
