Due to the weight of a p38 range rover can you legally tow one on a trailer behind another range rover,

gross weight of the trailer 3500 kgs trailer weight 800kgs so im right in thinking it can carry 2700 kgs ?????

weight on the plate of the range rover (DSE) 2780 kgs so its 80 kgs over and does a V8 weigh more than a diesel ?

answers on a post card please (or just post them below)

cheers steve.

look at the back of your drivers license if it shows category D D1 your legally entitled to tow up to 7.5 tonne imperial regardless of weather its a car trailer or a wagon designed for such a purpouse if you passed your test and got your full license after june 1998 you wont have this category due to the license rules changeing that year i had this category on my license and sent it off for endorsement it came back without i just foned the dvla and they agreed it was a mistake so i got it put back on
hope this helps

ps the 7.5 tonne rule does not count the weight of the towing vehicle aslong as its power towing capacity is not exeeded meaning that typicaly a rangie can tow 3 times its own weight safely so if your towing another rangie on a purpouse built trailer you should have no problems

I think you'll find that Category D is bus/coach...and D1 is minibus :)

2780kg is really heavy!!! Brian James do a car trailer which can carry 2750kg, gross 3500kg. So maybe it could just about be done by taking off the spare wheel and battery, and putting into the towcar? Otherwise, it would need to go onto a low loader truck. Once you get into >3500kg trailers, there's a bunch more regulations so most transporters would not use one, unless they're properly into haulage etc.

id make sure and drain the fuel tank aswell got to be good for another 50kg

:)As I tow livestock I have had to look into the regs on trailers. Its complicated but as far as I know you can tow up to 3500kg on a suitable braked twin axle trailer. As commented before you need to be liceenced to do so and your vehicle must be rated.Luckily all LR vehicles tow 3500kg!Watch the "train weight"too if your vehicle is loaded as well.Over 3500kg you need air brakes on the trailer. All the max weights will be on the VIN plate.I have towed a109"on a car trailer behind another 109" and drove luvly300 mls.Enjoy!

Done it this way round no problem.

Rangie shouldn't weigh more than 1700 / 1800 kg surely

>3500kg, the trailer needs to have coupled brakes (ie not overrun, and they don't need to be air although hardly anyone would use hydraulics or electric in the UK), automatic coupling and (I think, not sure) trailer ABS. Exemptions apply for agri under 20mph.

Thinking about it the 2780 on the rangie may be the fully laden weight ie 5 people plus a boot full, does anyone no the unlayden weight ?? If so it should be well under empty.

I'm asking as i'm looking to upgrade my trailer and if i'm doing this may aswell get one that will legally carry heavy cars, i've had a range rover on my old trailer and I could only get up to 25 - 30 mph without it snaking

This is the trailer i would like depending on the price of a second hand one - Ripon Trailer Centre - Car Transporter

In the original post you say you looked up the weight on the plate - was it the GVW you looked at? To know the kerb weight, we'd need to know the exact make/model/engine/spec etc to have any hope of getting it vaguely right, and even then it would just be a google search.....

I went buy the weight on the chassis plate the top one but as said not sure if thats loaded or not, the next one down on the plate is 64** kgs which must be the weight with a loaded trailer then front and rear axle weights, I really need to look in my hand book it must say in there.

The thing is its not mine (hopefully) that will be on the trailer just want to know if i but the trailer in link above will i be able to carry range rovers in general mainly p38s

The maximum you can tow with overrun brakes on any normal vehicle is 3500kg subject to the manufacturers rating. thats why the maximum weight of trailer and load you will see plated on the trailer is 3500kg. The capacity of the trailer will then be 3500 less the weight of the trailer. For close coupled brakes I think you can go up to 4000kg unless you are using heavy commercial vehicles. I think every landie is rated to tow 3500kg except Freelanders.
I know my Disco I weighs 2150kg. I think 110's are about 2250kg. The Disco III is about 2700kg so a current Range Rover could be that heavy. Funny how the things are getting heavier. You would have thought with all the emissions issues they would be trying to improve efficiency by getting the weight down.

since i pased my test after 98 i have been lookin into what i can and cant do and tbh i read one thing and i get confused !!!! to much bull **** to tow a trailer or carvan !!!! i enquired bwt a test but £500 u can .............(let u fill it in)

so i have given up and if i need to tow in the future will ask me dad haha

Anth

It is interesting to note that most motoring, caravaning, boating organisations do not recommend towing at more than 85% of kerb weight, although it may be legal to do so.

My V8 110 with a heavy 18 Foot twin axle tilt bed car trailer was about 2300kg on the scales so I'm guessing that the 110 weighed about 1700kg.
The Disco was about the same weight with a trailer on the scales so unless the Disco 2 is 450 kg heavier than the Disco 1 I think maybe one of us has the weights wrong.

This also means that a Disco on a heavy car trailer would weigh about 2300 kg so you would not be towing 3500kg but would be about 4 and a bit tonnes gross train weight.
