I just know ive opened up another forum can of worms on the whole subject but just cant seem to find straight forward answers.

1. Does your rear nearside tyre scrub on full to near full lock?

2. Is your freelander tight on full lock?

Mine seems to be yes for each but...

Slow turning speed nearside rear tyre scrubs
fast tight steering nearside front seems to scrub

I mean its not bad as in locks up but its noticable.

I have done vcu checks and it seems to be a smooth action and all 4 wheels spin when on mud.

no

a lill' bit .. only noted when in neutral .. i.e. coasting reverse full lock on a smooth inclined surface ..
recently replaced all 4 tyres .. changed brand ..
on same incline feels a bit free'er now .. .. just a tad ..

i think if your tyres are scrubbing on full lock ..
be time to look into changing the vcu .. investigate further ..
however i'm no expert on these matters .. might depend on hippo year
i.e. earlier hippo's had a different ratio between front and rear's rotation
only 'test' i've done is keeping an eye on the vcu temp via an i.r. thermometer
reads 20deg. above ambient on a normal road-run

1. Used to - the IRD got shagged, so 2WD at the mo - doesn't any more!
2. Never noticed it being tight at all.

It may be that mine scrubbed 'cos the VCU was shagged, but I don't think so. We have a shared gravel drive and have to manouver on full lock to park our 'fleet' up in their rightful places on our side. The bit that goes off to our side is paved - the wheels never scrubbed on there, but as soon as the wheel got to the gravel, there was invariably a scrub as it hit the loose and uneven ground.

I'm not sure if a few years of this manouvering 4 or 5 times a day helped shag the IRD or whether the VCU was faulty, but 400 miles on an underinflated tyre did the trick nicely!

If wheels are scrubbing, the VCU is tight and must be removed before it trashes the rest of the drive train!!

My inner rear wheel lightly scrubs on loose surfaces and mud. Slightly tight on Tarmac. Reconditioned vcu last year so doubt it's that. I put it down to older style gear ratios

Presumably some light scuffing on loose surfaces is to be expected as the VCU is always going to cause some drag. Wheels scuffing on high grip surfaces isn't good.

it mainly scrubs on looser surfaces. Noticed something new this evening i had 3 people in the car and it didn't make any scrubbing noise untill i put it on full lock around tesco car park and i could hear a slight scrubbing.

Will end up putting another vcu on it to be on the safe side.

Are you absolutely certain the noise is the rear tyre scrubbing and is it evident on the tyre tread?

I have found out my mistake. My tyre guage is faulty and I ended up putting 40 psi in the rear tyres.
Now reduced this to 30 all round and its not scrubbing tyres.

Although im still wary and want to replace the vcu as it must be getting tight at 83,000
Its a 2001 on a y plate

recently had 4 new tyres on .. i requested 31psi from the fitters
they put in 35psi all around ..
immediately comparing old to new .. ( different brand tyres )
'my the steering is lite' methinks .. 'n on the return trip had strong gusty sidewinds
very twitchy steering in the winds .. slightly scary ..
took tyres back down to 31psi .. and all was back to 'normal' ( steering feedback )
no 'wtf' moments with side-gusts :)

get in touch with 'bell engineering' ..
i think they even provide vcu's in various states of 'tune' .. from a post read hereabouts

With no rear drive, I'm running Goodyear Wranglers on the front at 30psi and GT Radial Maxmilers on the rear at 40psi - seams to handle fine and is comfortable for me as the driver - just a bit more harsh over gravel.

The Wranglers are discontinued in 195/80-15 over here, so had to put something else on the back. As the Maxmiler's are basically van tyres, I'm hoping I get good wear out of them! Been on about 5 months now.
