I've just been given a battery from a guy a work ,its new and is a victron energy 12 v 120 amp gel battery.

it a big lump , is there any way i could use this on my defender? may be in a split charging system ?( to run my spot lights)or is it to big and the amps to high?

The alternator on my 200tdi is the standard 65 amp one , is there any use for this battery or should i use it as a door stop!!

many thanks

sean at moment i have some crapy varta battery thats been in my 200 since i got it, is this battery ok to use then is the amps not to high for the wiring?
im new to this 12 v wiring stuff!!

providing the terminal layout is simillar and you dont have to fanny about lengthening the connecting cable just fit it - it'll just take a bit longer to charge - but you'll have tons more umphf for those cold mornings

does it say what the CCA rating is ? (just incase it's designed for a UPS)

that looks like one designed for a UPS rather than a vehicle, would be good as a secondary battery to keep yer 12v fridge/TV/etc etc going - via a split charge unit

cant see the CCA rating

the ampage rating is the maximum that battery can supply, depending on the load of course this varies, a really small light bulb will only draw a few milliamps, maybe an amp or two, whereas the starter motor can draw several hundred.

If you want to split charge it, i have read thaqt the x-charge from x=eng is very good (link someone?)

However, as it says on it it is a deep cycle battery, designed to provide good current until it is drained, and then be charged up again, over and over. A normal car battery will suffer with this treatement, 'cos they are designed differently, i.e. to provide a seriously high current for a few seconds, which won't drain them fully, and then to be topped up again.

It would make a fair/good winch battery, so a split charge would be good, but I wouldn't use it instead of what you've got 'cos a cold morning and it probably wont start.

sean if i want to use this as a split charge unit ,will i need a system rated to 120 amps?

i dont quite know what you mean by a "system" - but this is the split charge unit you'd need

X-eng High Performance Off-Road Engineering

UPS stands for uninterruptible power supply

CCA stands for cold cranking amps and is the maximum current (amps) that you could drag out of the battery

however as has been established that battery isnt suited to massive current drains over very short periods

I have a battery similar to that, found it to be poor for starting or jump starting a vehicle but I have it on a trailer now with 12v tipper ram/pump and it holds a charge for ages, only charge it bout once a year, if thats any help..
