Can i test my starter motor?

Hi guys i hope you are all well?

So i have a processing problem with starting my 300Tdi engine over the last month.

Here is the story

One day when i started the engine it turned over very slow and fired up after 3-4 revs at a guess. I thought wow thats odd as i have rebuilt me 110 and all is new. for a few week fired up fine every time but then it would do the same slow start randomly.

The alt is working fine and i have a battery tester and the state of the battery is good.

This leads me to think my starter motor has failed after 8 months. It is a lucas recon off eBay.

when it slow turns over it never goes click click click because the battery has never been flat. i have also swiped over the relays and it still turns over slow.

Can i test the starter do deffo know is no longer any good before i buy a new bosh one?

Like he says ^^^^^^^, earth faults and loose connections are common.

Also, unless you have a drop tester, a battery can test good for voltage, and still not start an engine.
So I would be trying another battery before going out and spending on another starter motor.

Have a battery tester that test the cca.
 
You can bench test as above but it won’t show a loaded test if your taking it off to test may as well bang a new one on worst case you have a good spare
 
You really need two earth leads on the defenders one from the battery negative to the chassis and another from the battery negative to the engine as near to the starter motor as possible
The original 200 earth setup was crap and the original 300 earth set up was not much better
 
You need to connect a voltmeter between the supply cable where it attaches to the starter motor and the other connection to the starter motor body, making sure you have really good connections.
Check voltage while cranking the engine. Then check voltage across battery when cranking. Any significant difference between the two readings will show bad wiring. If so, measure voltage between battery positive and starter supply terminal and then between starter casing and battery negative - again, when cranking, so under load.. This will identify where any wiring / connection problems lie
