can i run my disco without drivers air bag

I want to put an after market steering wheel on my disco is this possible ?

My mate has put one on his but he had problems with fault light on dash.
I think he overcame it Ill ask him and let you know.

did you check with your mate?

That could be an MOT problem as im sure the light has to come on and go off as part of the test, you may have to refit the wheel for the mot and i would check with your insurance as they might not like it either lol

there are two ways:

1. to emulate the airbag's presence with a resistance connected to the plug from the rotary coupler...you have to measure the resistance of the airbag module and use the same

2. to cut the wire which goes to the warning lamp at the instrument pannel plug and link it to other working warning lamp's wire

Sorry for a little bit of a hijack but how hard an impact do you need to set off the airbag? has anyone set one off during normal offroading?

Your solutions can be brilliant from what I've seen, but your ethics are dodgy!!

Insurance will be instantly void by doing any of the above, surely.

it's not about my ethics or not ...i wont do that on my own car whatsoever, but the man seemed determined to do it so i gave him the good solutions... it's everybody's choice IMO how he takes care about his own safety, and the driver's airbag will affect only the driver... ethic or not the insurance companies who would ripp you off in one second but thinking twice when they have to pay are my last concern

Totally agree they'll rip you off. That's what they do. But let's not help them!

Just thought, in case it isn't obvious, that there are reasons why you wouldn't just bypass a light like that. If he sells the car on, would they think they had an airbag!?!

Lets not argue, I think your advice is great, but I thought perhaps the implications should be clear. I know you're not anyone's Nanny, its just in this case it needed clarifying.

Take the clocks out and cover the light with insulting tape. Its only an advisory ATM.
If it stays on its a fail. Go figure?

...so you don't have to have a steering wheel with an airbag in it at the moment?

BTW have they changed the MoT yet? Reason I ask is my old Vauxhall Astra had it's last MoT last year. The airbag light has always been on in that car and I owned it for the previous 3 MoTs no fails due to the constant airbag light.

A shame really - whilst I find the LR steering wheel comfortable enough, it is a bit lacking in style points!
