I have a 1990 classic 3.9 v8.

I need to change the sump gasket , can I get it off without removing anything else?

I noticed some rods going accross underneath it, can I slip it out without moving them?

Im hoping its just undo all the bolts, off , clean , hylomar, gasket, bolt back on am I right?

If its the same as my old 3.9 Disco when I had to do the same job:
  • Jack the car up on axle stands so the front axle drops away to give you a bit more room.
  • Pop one track rod end ball joint out so you can swing the steering rod right out the way.
then you should have great access to do the job.
Might as well chuck a new set of big end shells in while your at it, save taking it off again ;)

Err no shells lol.

Can I get the ball joint off just by whacking it with hammer, I dont mean to be brutal but I have to do this tommorow and I dont have a splitter.

Can you wiggle the sump off with out taking the ball joint apart?

You won't know unless you try it for yourself;)
There is an oil pick up pipe/strainer that goes into the sump so you gotta make sure you got enough room beneath when you drop the sump, that's why I did the job the way I did.
There might not be a paper gasket either, could be just a liquid gasket you apply yourself.

You don't need to drop the track rod or drag link off to do this!

Jack the chassis up so the axle drops down, once you have a little bit of clearance I find using a small 2 tonne bottle jack between top of the axle and the chassis works fine (off the bump stop plate on the axle). If not jack chassis and put big (tall) axle stand under it. If you don't have tall enough axle stand use concrete blocks or suitable bits of timber but make sure all is firm and even, you don't want 2 tonne of motor slipping off the stands/jack.

The higher you can support the chassis the better, gives you more room.

Once you have jacked the chassis, remove the dip stick (this is fundamental, you really need to remove this, I'm not joking). Undo the sump bolts and carefully ease the sump down. You will need to drop the back end down and then move the sump toward the back of the car then you'll need to wiggle it about a bit and it should come out easily. If it is a struggle you need to jack the chassis higher. Take care not to bend the oil pick up or the lip of the sump.

Hope that helps ya.

Thanks, why the dipstick out? does it get caught?

I am hoping to get this done tomorrow so will post RE sucess

Am also hoping to fit my bullbar at the same time too!

BTW, when you remove the sump I seem to think I actually took mine out side ways. But I'm sure once you get under there you'll figure it out.

Before you put the sump back on make sure you clean everything. I presume you'll be using black RTV as your gasket. Make sure you get a good bead of it on the sump and leave it a while so it just starts to gel then CAREFULLY put the sump back on. Do the bolts up finger tight so the sump sits evenly all the way round then slowly work your way around the sump bolts tightening progressively so you pull it up as evenly as possible.

Thats the plan although I have got a a new gasket form paddocks (its not britpart) and a tupe of Hylomar .

Not sure how long that will last. As standard my 91RRC didn't have a gasket. Land Rover switched to RTV silicon instead of gaskets and certainly that is the case with the TDi. Also, not sure if hylomar likes oil?? I know it works with heads but the sump gasket is a bit different, less clamping force from fixings and sump is likely to be slightly distorted. I suspect this is why RTV is perhaps better suited, it is more flexible and can accommodate any distortions in the lip of the sump and should give a slightly better seal around the bolts.

All of that said, my sump is currently weeping and I need to take it off to re-seal it. OOOPPPPSSS:eek::eek::doh:
