Can anyone tell me what this is?

Hi, Got my 2009 Freelander 2 back from the dealers and noticed this connector lying on top of the battery. I see from some Youtube videos its supposed to connect to another cable that should also be on top of the battery, but cant see anything. My battery just died and I'm wonder if this had anything to do with it. Thanks.

The connector has been linked out with a green wire on the other side of the plug.
Does it have stop-start?

Hi, no it doesn't have Stop/Start, shouldn't it be connected to something? Heres another pic, maybe a bit clearer to see? Thanks for the reply.

I don't remember seeing that connector on my 09MY SE at all.
I'll have a look when I've got a moment.
I'll look it up in the manual too, just for good measure.

Many thanks, mines, the diesel. I'm sure it wasn't like that when I sent it in and with the battery suddenly dying on me, I'm a bit worried.

I can't see the colour of the wires to that plug, but mine doesn't seem to have anything like that near the battery.
Mine also doesn't have the extra red wire going to the positive terminal, so does yours have some aftermarket equipment installed?

Hi, I don't have anything else fitted, but here is a pic from a Youtube site where a guy is replacing a battery. It shows the same plug as I have and where it's supposed to plug in to.
I don't have the other connection though. I saw an advert online for a plug like mine and it was called a Freelander 2 Battery Fusible Link. It's also listed in the Land Rover parts list, but I can't seem to find out what it does and why mine isnt connected to anything. I've ordered a new battery to replace the bad one and am worried if it might ruin the new one too. Thanks for looking for me.

Are you sure you don't have stop/start? Is there an ECO button on the far right of the hazard switch panel?
Mine doesn't have stop/start, so wouldn't need the wiring.

It looks in the video that the missing harness goes into main loom behind the battery.

Also it looks like your battery terminal doesn't have the hole for the plastic plug to clip into, which it does in the Powerful UK video.

Thanks again for taking the trouble to help. I've had the car since new in 2009 and its definitely not stop/start. My plug has a metal clip that clips on to the bright metal part of the positive terminal as shown in the pic.
Any thoughts on the fact that its supposed to be a Battery Fusible Link?

Maybe it's something that was added for the 2010MY, if yours is a 59 plate?

The fusible link is the narrowed section bolted to the battery terminal on the thick red wire.
I've put a red dot on the fusible link part in this picture.


Yours also has the fusible link, it's just your battery terminal is turned 90° to mine.
The purpose of the fusible link is to protect the wire to the starter motor, as its at the front and could short out in a crash. The fusible link fails first in this instance, reducing the risk of a fire after a crash.

The thin wires are for some kind of sensing of the battery voltage, which is why I asked about stop/start as that system needs to monitor the battery condition for it to function correctly.
I can't see anything that relates to your plug in the wiring diagrams, although they are extensive, so I might have missed it.

Thanks for all the info. The new battery should be here tomorrow. I'll take the old one out and see if any changes have been made or if the missing bit is below the battery tray or something. Many thanks again.

Took out the old battery expecting that the missing cable connection might be under the battery tray or something. Definitely nothing there though.. As I said, I've had the car since new so perhaps they fitted the wrong one at the factory. I remember the dealers fitted a new battery under warranty after about three or four years so maybe it got changed for some reason. Many thanks for your help but not sure where to go from here. I'll just ignore it and see if there's an issue in the future.

If it's not causing any issues, then maybe it's never been connected.
