Series 2 Can anyone tell me what this is please.

I've just got my gearbox back from the gearbox specialist's over the weekend and yesterday ( day off) I decided to make a start fitting the ancillaries back on and started with refitting the hi/lo lever and whilst struggling fitting the leaver and the swivel bracket together this clip fell off the ball on the lever and trying to hold the clip in place and fit the lever and swivel bracket all at the same time was just too much so for now I've fitted the lever without the clip.

Now of all the series landy's ive owned and worked on in the past I can honestly say I've never seen one and always wondered what the slot was for and now I know, so I thought I would ask is this clip needed and what was the reason for this clip, thanks.

It goes in the slot in the ball on the L/H range lever and stops it rattleing. I'm not sure it makes a lot of differnce.
