Isn't a 12L number a disco 200tdi? Just wondering as you've put this in the 2.5td 19J sectiob

The USA has slightly different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) from the world. Digits 1,2,3 are set by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) for each automotive company
Digits
1 Country: S = UK
2 Manufacturer: A = British Leyland/Rover
3 Vehicle Make: L = Land Rover
4 Line (model)
D = 90 & 110
H = Range Rover Classic
J = Discovery
N = Freelander
P = Range Rover (mk2)
T = Discovery, Series II
5 Series (Emissions and wheelbase)
C = LWB (108") Range Rover Classic--must be a 49 State Emmissions
E = 50 State Emisssions: NAS Range Rover, mkII (100")
H = NAS 110"
N = 50 State Emissions: NAS Discovery (100")
V = 49 State Emissions: NAS 90" or NAS Range Rover, mkII (100")
50 State Emission for NAS Range Rover Classic (100" & 108") X = 50 State Emissions (California): NAS 90"

A numberic value is assigned to each letter in the VIN

Each position of the VIN is given a weight factor
1=8, 2=7, ... , 7=2, 8=10, 10=9, ... , 17=2
Multiply each digit by it's weight factor and sum for positions 1 to 8 and 10 to 17.
Divided by 11 and find the remainder. The remainder is the 9th digit (with and X being used if the remainder is 10)
Example: a 1996 Range Rover Classic (SALHE124XSA660000)
VIN: S A L H E 1 2 4 X S A 6 6 0 0 0 0

Not on this case trying to import into USA would have UK ########### as not intended as a NA import. So needs to be 25 yrs or older
looks like it is a 1990............. to new needs to be a 1987.............. If only done a search

I'm just like you, an American in the UK in love with Defenders. I saw you had a 200TDi sent to the US and stuck in customs. Did you ever get it through customs? How much money did you end up spending door to door? I've got a shipper offering 1200 pounds for Roll on Roll off, and the customs people in the US offering ~$250 for customs help and dock/wharfage fees. Is this about the price you paid?
I'd love to call you and chat for 4-5 minutes and ask you how the process went, how difficult it was, and any advice you have for me to avoid. Do you mind calling me or giving me your number to talk? Thanks for your help, hope you got your Defender into the States without too much extra work.

Talk to RobinT about shipping he knows someone in the states who runs a shipping business. But be aware it won't even leave this country if all the docs/vin numbers/ chassis numbers etc aren't 100% spot on.
