Hi, been reading this forum for a while and I've definetly decided on a 90(after almost buying a 101 in a moment of madness), looked at lots advertised however this one has really caught my eye.
Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 90 new and used for sale

A few things worry me:

1. The price p.o.a. makes me think that it is going to be overpriced and expensive, anyone any idea, its Sunday so cannot phone and ask.

2. This being NAS spec I'm assuming its an auto. Had an automatic car once and hated it however it might not be so bad in something like this with such a torquey engine. Anyone know a link to the specs of the autobox, how many gears and does it have high and low box on it the same as the manuals? Anyone any opinions on the auto versus the manual?

3. I assume this must be a tuned Land Rover V8 instead of an engine dropped in it off a Griff or Chimera so hopefully it would be more reliable than a TVR built one. Can the drivetrain cope with this much torque and power reliabally.

4. I'm not overly concerned about the mpg, not because I am rich simply because I work offshore for 6 months a year and the rest of the time I'm at home so not doing great mileages, anyone hazard a guess what it will achieve, will it better 15mpg on a run?

5. Will I be able to bring myself to use such a nice looking motor offroad as its meant to be?

A lot more than what it's worth you'll be lucky if he's asking less than £10k Where as it's worth £5k

yes it has a transferbox that handles the low/high and difflock functions, I'd assume that it's the 4speed RR auto box that's been fitted.

Can't help you with this but yes it does sound like a TVR tuned Rangerover engine.

depends how heavy your right foot is. I would have thought that if you were thinking of such a highly tuned motor. You aren't likely to be cruising at 50mph

5. Will I be able to bring myself to use such a nice looking motor offroad as its meant to be?
No and in any case it's too highly tuned to be of much use to you off road, and perversely too highly modified to be of much use to you on tarmac, with the engine that it's had fitted.

Cheers for the replies. I understand it may divide opinion but I think it looks quite good, cheers for the info about the immobiliser I was under the impression that all there kit was of high quality but I'll look over it carefully if I decide to take a look. I notice it is being sold on behalf of a customer so maybe the work has been done elsewhere.

The main thing that attracts me to it is the engine, I have a TVR so having a TVR engined Landie does appeal a lot.

I'm suprised at you saying that it is only worth about 5k, sure it will be priced much higher than that and feel it would be worth it as well looks like it has had a lot spent on it.

Its worth what you wanna pay for it. If you want a powerful 4x4 auto thats been lifted that high it handle like a bus, then great. Theres therefore no point in having that much power.

All that silvery ****e on it too... :)

seriously though, it will handle awefully, and so will be too powerful for its ability.

i rekon about £5k is about right. You can get much better ones than that for that much money, its all bling - would you pay over the odds for a 1.1 saxo, cos it had a high flow exhaust, air filter, big alloys an a lowering kit?

I sure know i wouldn't...

Yeah, pretty much. And you wouldn't want to load if high with ****e to take somewhere, unless you damage it inside, you couldn't tow with it cos its too high, you couldn't drive it anywhere in a hurry, an all for a price thatll be extortionate!

Feed in the power on anything but a dead smooth dead straight road and you'll either roll it or veer straight into the path of oncoming traffic. It's a 90 ffs they were never designed to sit that high up or travel at high speed. With that engine in it they should have lowered it's C.O.G not raised it.

And if you used it off road those tyres and that much torque will destroy diffs, halfshaft and hubs

Right you have put me off (unless it is only £5k)

Can understand the comment about having to much power for the handling being raised so much but surely this extra ride height will aid it offroad.

Am I really the only person that thinks it looks good? I always thought I had a good taste in cars, maybe this does not translate into landies.

14 to 16k is ridiculous, I'll call tomorrow and find out though and update on here.

raising it will help a bit off road, but you wudn' want to scratch it so you would avoid most off road places, and you will find that that much instant V8 power will just break traction constantly, so making the lift kit pointless.

I can understand why as a CAR it looks nice, to an extent, like the boy racered' corsas look 'nice' in HUGE inverted commas! But... At least they are (hopefully) gonna be quicker, or handle better. This is stupid for a LR, and won't do anything well at all!

Why bother! Unless you purely want a show car, and nothing else.

na, i think it looks good too. If you want a landy to pose in then you have the right vehicle. As everyone has said, its too high, too much power etc etc. you will have to weigh it all up. Its not close to a practical motor, but what do you want it for? to replace your TVR on weekends? or to commute and abuse offroad?

Offroad depends what you want to. If your doing some gentle greenlaning then it will be fine. take it to the peak district or tight lanes in Wales and it will get butchered.

Nene do have a high price tag, but you have picked a unique vehicle. try and find a NAS spec 90 through private sales... you wont. thats why it will be priced high.

let us know why you want, how often you will use it and what kind of offroading you want to use it for. then people can give you a better idea of what its worth.

lifts do not improve ground clearance. They allow you to fit bigger tyres which will then lift your diff an inch or two depending on the size of the new tyres. But that in turn creates extra strain on the diffs and increases the chance of snapping your halfshafts. factor in the increased torque and power of a 4,6ltr V8 and it'll spend more time been towed than it will been driven.

To be honest I've wanted a Landie for ages, my dad is really into them, he has a SII that he has spent most of his life working on and a Hilux, Trooper, 110 cross that he uses as an every day vehicle, he's also had an SI, Willy Jeeps etc, all my extended family are also into Land Rovers so that is where the bug has come from.

What will I be using it for, not sure, just general commuting, taking rubish to the tip, going up and down the crappy roads around here (Aberdeenshire), towing - possibly although I have nothing to tow, replacing the Cerbera - nope I've spent so much time and money on that it is being kept forever. Mainly it will just be a cool motor, different to all the other crappy euroboxes that people drive around in and sticks 2 fingers up to the green brigade. Also I love V8's and really would prefer it to a diesel, can never get enough of the noise (same cannot be said for my neighbours though).

However if it is going to be crap to drive, keep breaking half shafts and useless off road paying over the odds for it just because I like the looks of it is a no go. I also loved the look of the 101 I almost bought however showing a picture of it to my missus the idea was quickly kicked into touch. Women they are such spoil sports.

sounds like you need a practical motor! just go for a stock 3.5 V8 90 then. no lift. mud terrain tires, tow bar etc.

Think my mate is selling his down here in Bristol for 3k. nice motor, factory fitted 3.5 V8 manual with 60ish K on the clock.

I would be hunting out something like that over the Nene. especially if your towing and filling it with crap!

I concur with griff get a stock 90 V8 or even a 110 if you want the extra storage. and mod it yourself if you want to. you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that it's your own creation not someone elses, and that you've done the work yourself, and you'll know that no corners have been cut when the mods were done.

its nene so going to be over priced lol

I've got a V8 110 with an auto and TBH I'd hate to have a manual in a LD

the 4.5L rover V8 was found in the chimera had 285hp 305lb ft torque. power is similer to that of a RPI stage 3 4.6. reliablity is probably not that bad so long as its taken care of. the AJPV8 found in the cerbera was not as reliable as the rover engine

depends on your foot lol.

5. Will I be able to bring myself to use such a nice looking motor offroad as its meant to be?

yes
