Newbie here....:crazy_driver:

We are looking for a Diesel, 5 door, possibly one of the older ones, What sort of mileage are they good for before things start wearing out? and if you do start replacing bits do the aftermarket parts last? (been replacing front forks on my mondeo II about every 18 months). market research so far suggests something reasonable is possible for about £3,000 with about 60,000 miles. Do they go on forever mileage wise, or are they a liability after a certain point like many cars? Also, 45mpg+? a few people have suggested this is possible. I know about the viscous coupling and rear door quirk, anything else to look out for?

I cannot comment on high mileage as ours has only done 40k (or something like that:lol:) but would be surprised to see 45mpg, ours is generally used for more local running but no real town or city driving and gets around 35mpg I would say. No doubt you will get a bit more with motorway driving.

We get 42 mpg from P-reg diesel Mondy 1.8 Td
So hoping to get similair from Freelander.

I have a TD4 commercial, bought it on 12k in August 08 and its now on 95k.

Other than tyres and brakes its not been too bad at all. Just had the slave cylinder fail on which meant a gear box out job and so installed a new clutch plate and DMF while at it but for the mileage then im not too bothered

My MPG is about 38 to 42 at the moment which im happy with.

The VCU's are known to go on older models (was it pre 2001?) but an updated one seems to be far more reliable. If serviced well (at a specialist, not a normal back street garage) then they are good motors. Will also help if you dont mind getting your hands dirty yourself occasionally and fix any niggling faults quickly before they get

Hi, I have an 03 plate TD4, its now done about 55,000 with no major probs really, only issue i've had is the master cylinder on the clutch, think from my reaserch the whole clutch system can play up a bit. master cylinder is a cheap repair (£200), its the slave cylinder which is the expensive one (think u can be looking £800+ for that, so far i haven't had any issues with that tho. lets hope it stays that way). As for MPG i reckon i get about 38 - 40 MPG, thats a combination of city and motorways, obviously less when i'm towing. (have got a roof rack on mine too which prob doesn't help the MPG).

Hi, i have a 2001 td4, 120,000 miles. i use it to travel between scotland and wales. other than a dodgy fuel pump I have had no problems. and on the motorway it returns 40-45mpg easy. the vcu and ird were replaced at 100,00 if this helps.:monitor_punch:
 
Not too sure if you're after an L-series engine or early Td4 model but both are in your range. Here's a few examples.

2000 LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2.0 XE DI WITH FULL SERVICE HISTORY

2001 LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2.0 Td4 GS Station Wagon 5dr Diesel

2002 LAND ROVER Freelander 2.0 Td4 GS Station Wagon

These appear worth looking at & both engines are good for 200k+ miles if regularly serviced & looked after. Td4 have more problems with athe ancillaries e.g. fuel pumps, MAFs etc. whereas L-series are less refined, a bit slower & need regular cambelt changes. Both are good engines & roverron does a synergy for both to help out in the performance/economy department.

Our 2000 W reg L series diesel Freelander has done 151,000 miles and has had a new gearbox, VCU and shocks, front discs. They say that a well serviced and sensebily driven L series is good for 200,000 Plus miles. I prefer the L series as I belive it's easier to service at home. On the other hand our 1.8K Freelander did 100,000 mile and had two new engines due to Head Gasket Failure. Which is why we went for a diesel. Which gives us 43Mpg on a run.

just think how much better it will be when you get round to fitting a synergy vp.
 
Synergy 2 is for the Td4,
Synergy VP is for the L-series.

Both sold by roverron & well worth the money as my very own Td4 can attest to.
 
what is a synergy vp? and how do you fit?


It's a tuning box which improves performance & economy sold by roverron. It's well worth the money at under £200, & fairly easy to fit. Do a search on here for more info, roverron is highly regarded & even provided car mechanics magazine with one of his units for their rover 75 diesel with the same motor as the Td4. Really does benefit the good old L-series according to a couple of members on here.
 
51 reg td4 with 130 000 on the clock ,new clutch at 120 plus normal niggles crank case breather ,hand brake cables ,sticking pistons all pretty simple keep on top of them they are ok
 
10 year old L-series with 143000 miles on clock, its had a relpacement clutch, new front discs, a new coolant rail, new coolant hoses and a new horn relay.
It needs a new expansion bottle and starter solenoid at the moment.
Go for an L-series over a td4, they are much cheaper, easier to work on and more reliable.

Awe Howardo & I thought I'd converted you to the Td4:D

Tis an element of truth in what you say though but I still like my old Td4.
 
L series are the future!:rolleyes:
Before I had it, turbo, head gasket and #3 piston were knackered- it still ran.
Bulletproof, cheap plentiful spares and a good feeling that it will indeed plod on forever.
Im going to upgrade the interior in mine this month and get a synergy VP like chromiumuk syas, they give good results.
