I'm a very logical chap not disbelief just couldn't work out why a LCD screen would need back light.you can see a digital watch, but in the dark it needs to be back lit I thought being green it was some sort of led screen

That is how they work. And why some dodgy car salesmen use to take the bulbs out when taking a car to the MOT station. Record mileage was not readable so was not put on ticket, they could then clock the car back to the previously recorded mileage. Believe now there is some sort of lamp you can shine on them to read mileage even if back lights are duff. Friend of mine sadly passed on now. Took her little Pug to the dealers in Preston because she had lost her message centre. Believe it or not they quoted her £450.00 for a new instrument pack and fitting. I repaired it for her in twenty minutes at a cost of 50p. That is true not bull****. It is amazing how dishonest some dealers can be.

There are 3 types of LCD display, transmissive, reflective and transflective. The first requires a light source to be seen, the second can be seen in daylight without a light source, the third can use both back lighting and reflection of daylight to be visible:) LR used the first which is why the displays are all but invisible in sunlight:mad:

Cheers :)
