Camshaft end float HELP!

I've got another one of many questions about my 200tdi. This one seems a little more serious though. I was going to check the endfloat of the camshaft of the replacement bottom end I've recently purchased (I bought a mag base and everything), when I realised the camshaft had A LOT of back and forth movement. I've taken the lift pump mount off and from what I can tell the rear shaft bearing is still in place. So what could be causing it to move so much? I was hoping to get the new engine in by January but it doesn't look like that's going to happen
