No girlfriend wanted a camcorder as we have a private blog for our distant relatives to login and view.

She bought one as she suggested that the one we have is old-but perfectly okay for youtube uploads.

She wanted a 1080 full hd model and obviously expected a 1920x1080 resolution to be good.
I would have gone for a hdd model and researched on the Internet-but she wanted to buy one locally (her money)

I do have an Olympus E600 DSLR which I don't claim to be an kind of expert with, but produces some photo's that are nice in my opinion.

Did ye have a look at the Panasonic I linked way back?

This might be less surprising when you consider that “full” HDTV is also not that many megapixels. Go ahead, multiply 1080 by 1920 (I’ll wait). Just a hair over two million, no?

Yet we all seem to feel that 2 Mp looks pretty darn nice, even when blown up to a 52″ screen.

Langers I did look at the link.

I said to her that twice bitten anything locally you want to see recording played back or full unaltered video on net.

Does it look better than that straight off the camera? Cause it looks like you've only rendered that to SD quality (480p) as opposed to HD. What editing software are you using (if any)?

No it is sd at moment, but it still from a viewing perspective better than the two cameras she tried which had poor colour and noise on image you couldn't remove by altering settings and I guess "frame rate issues" as well.

Makes me wonder if the overall pixel count was higher, but the image sensor quality and raw image processing software were crap.

I base the above on nicer pictures from a 3 m pixel nikon point and shoot v 5 m pixel medion brand camera (horrendous pictures)

Ah right I thought that video was off one of the HD models you tried. As far as SD cams go that one isn't too bad. And yeah, as with a lot of consumer electronics at the moment, the companies know that by slapping on a 'HD' badge and putting in some basic, cheap components they can sell a helluva lot more. They know people will assume the quality will be great just by virtue of it being HD-Ready.

So long as you move away from entry level models, you'll be safe with pretty much any of the major brands in the £300 range - that includes Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Canon etc etc.
