Engine rebuild time, cam and timing chain and sprockets all renewed.. Any one know a good way of setting the cam timing properly?!

I have thought of setting it to tdc then working out where the cam should be but it seems horribly pot luck!

cheers

There's a good guide in the manual - explains where the timing marks are and how to set the tension.

what tension do you set, i thought that was done by spring loaded tensioner

Once you've got the crankshaft and camshaft in position you can juggle with the cam sprocket position using the various keyways to set the tension between the two sprockets on the driving side. Slack on the non driven side is taken up by the tensioner.

i see what you mean , but its not the tension ,the vernier key ways allow you to achieve as accurate timing as possible ,while checking you should turn crank twice and re check it is worth setting cam slightly advanced if possible as new chain will stretch ,but not all petrol cams have vernier key ways ,i was rather hoping this was going to be about diesel timing as it needs to be a bit more accurate

Surely they both need to be pretty accurate to run properly? Or is the valve overlap a bit less important in the petrol as it is spark ignited?
