Just purchased a '96 ex military 300tdi and the cam belt broke within a few days.

A Land Rover garage was the nearest port of call and they have come back to me and said that cam belt damaged the fuel pump when it snapped. They reckon that there is play in the pulley bearing at the end of the pump. Along with replacing the belt, push rods and rockers they are quoting me around £2400 to repair it (£1300 for a new pump). This seems a bit steep but they have already charged £300 for the labour in diagnosing the problem.

I have had chaeper quotes elsewhere but the cost of moving it doesn't really save any money. Would I be better off getting a second hand pump and getting them to fit it or should I try and get it taken elsewhere?

it's highly unlikely that your pump is damaged by virtue of a broken belt, get them to replace everything but the pump (rockers push rods etc). then look to replace the pump as a seperate issue.

the only thing that drives the pump is the belt, and the car was runing when it snapped, so stands to reason that it'll work after the belts been replaced

Agree totally.Fuel pump may be worn anyway,of course, but they can be completely recon. for£400-500.Beware of cheap jobs they often leak and need expensive repair.A good one can do 500,000mls if cared for.Garage dont seem to want your business why not DIY.You will need a tool to time the pump.
