I've fallen on the strangest headlamp query... Up until the other day my headlamps (defender 200) have always worked fine. I've changed the stewing column for a 48 spline, plugged all the dash harness back in as per, and the headlamps will only work in dim dip. Having searched and searched I've found out that there is a slot next to the starter relay for headlights. Swapped the starter relay into the light slot and all works fine??? There's never been a relay in the before so why all of a sudden does it now need one I ask? The only thing I've done is removed aux wiring the previous owner has left because I hate scotch locks so I would have said the wiring is "clean" now compared to before. Real head scratcher for me. Has anyone come across phantom light operation like this before?

Scotch locks cut into the insulation and the wire. When you removed them did you break the copper conductors, ???

The wiring has originally been for front spots I would have said because it was tapped into the main beam feed, so I've tidied it up whilst doing the steering column and wiper rebuild. The aux stuff was just open wiring not doing anything so out it came. The scotch locks haven't broken the circuit anywhere because it all works normal with a relay fitted in the factory slot but the puzzle is, there never was a relay and it worked ok. Seems for some reason the landy has decided it won't work anymore until I fit something it didn't need in the first place
