Today I put the calipers on my rebuild. When I took them off to rebuild them, I had to drill one of the bolts out to remove it. When it came to putting them on the new bolts are longer than the old ones with a much shorter thread length. This meant that the bolts wouldn't go in far enough to secure the caliper. I solved this by putting a washer on the bolts but I'm sure this isn't safe so I was wondering whether there was more than one caliper bolt length?

Original bolts should have spring washer, as long as the thread is fully in mounting-your good

rusty bolt isnt a caliper bolt its a rear A frame ball joint bracket to axle bolt ,new one is correct it has a large shank to act as dowel in caliper

caliper bolts are supposed to have washer ,caliper is under quite a lot of stress when braking bolt is designed to have as much shank as possible in caliper, washer is WL112001L

Thanks so much guys, It's amazing how you know all this stuff. I can sleep well tonight, only knowing that they'll have to come off again tomorrow :(

Ot of interest what is tensile strength of stock bolts as i have 12.9 in mine until i bin the current axles

agricultural shear bolts are high tensile but they are placed in a loose hole so movement shears them ,hence close fit of caliper bolts

If you saw the state of what mine were like and sloppyness of thread-12.9 caps in there as i had them, moving to new axles when i rebuild them and i don't do great miles either.
If planned thousands of miles then i would buy replacements.

My gsf600 aka bandit are known to snap rear brake bolts
