C/locking, alarm, immob. prob?

Hello I have a problem with my '93 200tdi disco. Since owning it I have had one key, no fobs. Hence the alarm has never worked, there seems to be a bit of homemade wiring under the bonnet so I had assumed this was to bypass the alarm / immobiliser. On a few occasions, maybe 5 times in two years of ownership, unlocking the drivers door with the key ( my standard method of entry) has caused the hazards to flash, the ignition to not work and the LED on the dash to flash, now, the rest of the time the LED does nowt so I have usually re locked and the unlocked the car and within two or three cycles of this the LED lights up solidly the hazards stop flashing and the ignition starts up the engine. Today it just packed in working, a similar routine as before but it seems that whatever was dodgy before is now completely goosed there is a noise like a relay pulling in but not properly engaging so a bit like a grinding noise the LED at this point is flickering in time with the grinding noise so where as before it went solid and I could start the engine its flickering nature makes it a hit and miss affair. So, after all that has anyone got any ideas? All help greatly appreciated.

There is a small PCB assembly, generically called the 'Spider' behind the dash in the centre inside the car.

This contains the various relays for the immobiliser for the 200/300tdi vehicles. I am fairly sure the early 200tdi's had it fitted.

Have a squint at that and see if there are any dry joints on the board or bad connections.

No spiders in a disco 200, the alarm module is to the side and behind the glove box so wires in the engine bay could be anything. Have a look around the module for modified wiring although there is no nead to as the alarm/immobiliser is user set unlike the 300 passive immobiliser system.
I have only heard relays chattering never grinding so you need to trace the noise.
You may have a 'dormant' intermittant fault with the electrical connections that set and unset the alarm in the drivers door.

you can always get a s/h but working fob from ebay it will have a single button (the later 300s have two buttons) luckly single button fobs are user programmable to the vehicle. the procedure must be don in something like 8 seconds, the procedure has been posted as few times in the forum, if you can't find it I have it saved on another computer.
