Hi

Im looking for some help with my Defender wiring,
when i turn the ignition key there is a loud Buzzing coming from my Relays and the warning light flicker on the dash. As far as i know I've not done anything to upset the wiring since the last time i started it. If anyone has any ideas what may be the problem i would be grateful.

Thanks

Alec

All seams ok but don't wont to leave it buzzing for long incase it all goes bang
so not really checked much. my side light still work!.
Also indicator really buzzes when i switch the hazards on.

No not been brave enough! was running fine the day before and i had also had the ignition on earlier in the day. It seams to have just decided to make everything buzz even the glow plug relay.
i was trying to fit a cooling fan at the time and was looking for a spare power feed, i hadn't got round to wiring anything in so i don't think i changed anything.

May be just the battery voltage having dropped a bit. Likely if you've been doing a few short journeys with the lights on recently. I'd start it, and if everything's OK, try your hazards/indicators again. If all's OK, charge the battery with a decent long drive, or charger. If it's buzzing with the engine running, more likely a relay on it's way out. If you can get your hand to them, you can usually feel which one is buzzing.

Id say that's a battery problem too, Get your self a multimeter and check it.

Had the battery on charge for quite a while the other day and was still buzzing when i tried that but is quite old. I think all the relays buzz when ignition is on. :( could it be something to do with the power cable from battery to the starter then to the relays?
I will try to start the engine tomorrow and see what happens :)

If a new battery doesn't sort it, it's most likely an earth problem. Check all the big earth cables, particularly the one from the battery to the chassis.

What zeaphod said, battery and earth connections first. Just 'cos an earth lead looks good, don't believe it, undo the connectors, clean all of the connection and bolt up again. You might find that the main earth lead will crumble due to internal corrosion, only a few quid to replace .. ;)
