Hi ALl,

New here and new to defenders.

I have a 300tdi and after about 5mins driving there seems to be a very loud buzzing coming out of the dash like an angry wasp is P'd off! Im assuming its an electrical issue but thought i would see if its a common thing and where to start before i dive in and remove the dash!

Thanks all

Behind the clocks?
Not familiar with the 300 but ithink there are a couple of relays behind there.
Somebody could also have fitted aftermarket stuff behind there too like i have, interior light delay, immobilizer, hands free kit etc which could be faulty.
It might be a fire risk:eek:

To add, fiddling behind the dash is so much easier if you remove the steering wheel and column shroud then the binnicle..

No problem.
The steering wheel is usually a bit tight to get off but not always. Mine was a swine but comes off easily now I've removed it a few times over the years.
Mark it so it goes back in the same place.
Leave the nut on a few threads and smack up using your palms evenly under the rim. They tend to come free suddenly and you'll get a bloody nose if you completely remove the nut!
Make a note of which screw goes where on the shroud, they are different, i think, from memory.
When pulling the binnicle forward, disconnect the Speedo cable and don't force it or the plastic end can break off.
If you stuggle to get enough slack to disconnect the Speedo, remove it from the gearbox end and feed some slack up.

A quick look, prolly not worth it but if you need to do work in there the Access is so much better with the wheel out of the way.
Mines a 13" mountney which makes access worse maybe.
Like i said, my wheel pulls off easily so it's a no brainer for me.

Is it definitely electrical, does it happen continuously? Mine "buzzes" but it is only at certain speeds and is just the panels vibrating when the hit their resonant frequency.

Hi,
Sorry for delay. It hasnt done it for a while but Im removing my MUDconsole and Dash tomorrow as the PO has done some interesting work in there.Slightly off topic, anyone with a Volt Meter in there dash, what does it run at when your going say 2000rpm? Mines getting up to about 14.8v its definately rising with engine revolution. thanks

That's about right, may be a little high but that might be gauge inaccuracies. You could check direct at the battery with a digital multimeter.
I'd buy one anyway (a dmm) they are very useful and cheap enough.

Hi, yeah I've got a multimeter and the battery does rise as the engine does. I wonder if the regulator is on its way out!
Haven't been able to watch as I drive obviously.

Took the dash off and had to did some PO wiring "upgrades". Took a good few hrs chopping all the old stuff out.
