buying advice early 200tdi 90/110

Hello, Been a long time since i have been on here, always fancied defender ownership but my head always ruled my heart, in the past!. However i am now a dad and am seriously lacking anything to tinker with in the garage.
I am selling my beloved restored 84 automatic freight rover campervan to fund the purchase and would be grateful of some advice.
I have around £2500 to spend.
I am looking for a good solid 90 or 110, with sound oily and structural bits. Anything else i can live with and fix as i go along.
My question is will this price stretch to a half decent early 90/110 or would i be better looking for a good series3 with the 2.5 na?
The vehicle will be used for general short trip commuting (30ish miles a day) the occasional long trip for holidays towing a small caravan and obviously a fair bit of light off roading. Does this type of use rule out the 2.5na as a viable option for comfortable use?
Have looked on ebay etc but have only seen fairly rough 200tdi 90/110s for that price, Anywhere else i should look?
lastly i live in Suffolk, if i find anything local is there anyone here that would come have a look with me if i cover your fuel cost and a bit more for a few beers?

Any views on the ex mod landys (Witham), worth the price? any good for my type of requirments?

Loot, preloved,freeads,pistonheads,are the sort of places you should be looking as well , also try newly listed BIN on eBay because sometimes they come up underpriced but the chances are it'll be 300 miles away.

I've bought a number of cars over the last 10 years most have been 200+ miles away but have been the right car.

My 90 came from Irvine ,Xk8 from Swansea
 
I've got a 2.5na and don't think towing a caravan any distance would be too much fun.

It struggles abit on inclines without anything attached to it !, I still love it to bits though :)

200tdi would be a better option by far. Just need to be abit patient and maybe have to travel a few miles to get the right 1.

Mechanically reliable and easy to work on, just have a good look on chassis/bulkhead/pillars/door bottoms for rust/problems.
 
You will struggle to pull much with the 2.5NA and any hills need a lot of work with the gears. A TDI is a lot more user friendly and still easy to work on yourself, the issue is that your budget is a little bit low for a decent TDI, even an older landy with a conversion will be slightly above what you want to spend. So you are looking for a bargain and they do come up but you will have to punt on one when it comes up at a low price on eBay cause the ones in the ads will be more than you want to spend. That's my experience anyway. I had to spend 4k a year or so back to get an older converted TDI that was in good shape. The ones that were cheaper we're very tatty or had chassis issues.
 
I had a 90TD that I paid £800 for needed a bit of work but all the bits needed came with it.

And it pulled me 18ft pikey wagon and almost everything I own inc tools etc from Hull to Zummerzet..
