Hi I have had 5 or so Discoverys and have been looking at Range Rovers
I have mainly looked at manual box ones but there seems to be more choice and better spec in the auto box Range Rovers I know that the autos do a couple of miles to the gallon less just wondered how good the auto box is and how good it would be off road and in the snow etc just weighing up the pros and cons any help or advice would be much appreciated

The auto box is the one to go for in a Range Rover in my opinion and probably everyone elses. It's perfectly capable off road.

Are you looking at the petrol or diesel? I recall someone (possibly datatek) saying that the auto box is better because the torque converter makes it easier to get going than a manual (something along those lines anyway).

Someone else will be along to tell you more about why it's better soon I bet!

Auto on the diesel is the best, they are a tad 'lazy' below 2k rpm but the autobox masks this quite well....

They have a strange accelerator pedal travel with not muc hahppening over the first third then a bit of go for the second third...once stamped on the vehicle will leap into life

The diesel suffers from massive amounts of turbo lag. Off boost the compression isn't high enough to move 2.5t of metal forwards. In the manual you spend a lot of time slipping the clutch to get going. The V8 is better in manual guise as the power delivery is much smoother (also much better for offroad applications as you don't need to hammerhead your way out), but you're better with the auto in general with RRs.

The TC doesn't make up for the fact it is open diff, so if you do some proper offroading, be worth looking at LSDs or lockers. There is an Aussie company that made lockers for the P38 but I've seen a chap who made his P38 outback ready by fitting lockers from a Classic.

In the snow my P38 has never been a problem, mud foxes it, although a lot of that is tyres.
