Buying a landy for fishing

Hi all,

I'm new to the site, so hello to you all!

I am about to fulfill my dream of owning a land rover to help me go fishing in the fens.

I've been looking around to see the different choices and so far I have found there is
Defender 90- I really love the 90 for looks, there is something about a nice 90 in looks over a 110.
Defender 90,Wolf - I have seen these on ex mod sites. Not sure on the specifics of a wolf but they always look nice.
Defender 110 FFR - again seen these on ex mod sites, it's the 110 FFR I like as I'm set on needing a 110 for size as I have loads of fishing gear, rods, tents etc, but what I like about the FFR is its a 110 without the rear seats and extra doors like the station wagon model.
Defender 110 station wagon - as I said while i know I want/ need a 110 I don't like the station wagon model with the rear doors behind the driver and passenger doors.

As I'm not a mechanic and looking to spend 5-6k I want to be sure to get a sound landy with good service history etc.
I am liking the idea of a ex mod vehicle as I have seen a site called rugged 4x4 Rugged Guide Vehicles Ltd
that get ex mod landys, service them, spray them and treat the chassis, all for around my price range!

Given that I'm new I thought I'd share my plans and thoughts and get some feedback on whether it sounds like I'm heading In the right direction..

110 gives bags of load space. I used to kip in the back in a hammock. A 90 can be a wee bit pokey but is quite nimble. Bear in mind you might want to keep a few shekels for kitting it out.

You could always play with us big boys and get a Range Rover. Running down the lower echelons of society has never been so much fun!

A hammock is a great idea! I plan to setup my bed chair in the back and drive to fishing spots that no one else gets to!

2.5 NA engine is wee bit, well, Leyland Sherpa Van. But that spec does look quite inviting. I like the plassy hardtop.

lol...well, get a RHD one!

I mainly want it for rugged land and to sever my needs for fishing so I think I could live with a 2.5NA engine, but that said I've never driven one. I wouldn't expect much I tend to drive 60 mph tos anyway.

They have 20 of these babbies and it offers LHD or RHD

I like the sound of it being part of a big revamp project

Have a look to see what else is available for the equivalent monies or just grab one of those babies.

if youve never driven a 2.5na then I would say drive one and they are awful yes in the characher of an old lr great but for somone new to it they are not the best look for a 300tdi or 200tdi maybe a later TD5 would be good aswell 2.5na is not the best.

I normally use a boat,they tend to float better

If you go down the military route then it would be worth giving witham specialist vehicles a ring, I've dealt with them a few times and found them to be very helpful.

To reiterate; I've just been driving a Na not more that 5 mins ago to the shop and it is like driving a Sherpa Van. As I said - Avoid.

Hook?

You need to think bigger. Surely you'd get a snorkel and wading kit and just attach a trawling net to the back, then just drive through whatever stream or lake takes your fancy and drag your catch up the bank to be sorted out later

Just the detonators are more than adequate. speshully when thrown in to the tanks of a trout farm

Quarter of an ounce of PE4, and you will generally get a good catch!

FFS Dynamite!!??? ... And you have the cheek to call the others 'amateurs!!

110 2.5 N/a and you can do all the fishing you want ... The holes will let 'em in, but not out again!

Ok, you lot are beginning to worry me now. So im gonna back track a little.

OP, what you need is a 110 and a fishing rod.

Ive owned loads of different landies, but my current 110 is the most practical.
Go for a TDi, and if your gonna be carrying loads of fishing gear, keep some ££££s back for new springs and shocks.

You're all amateurs, a bag of lime is what you need, sorted.....
