I am planning on buying a 90 pick up and would like your thoughts and advice. It will be my first car for when I pass my test. I have been looking for a while and this has caught my eye, I was originally planning on buying a comercial but dont mind a pick up.

It is a 1992 landy, it has 180,000 miles, the chasis and every where else is very good condition, the clutch, slave and master cylinder have recently been replaced. The paint has been re-done the guy is wanting £3500 although I will do my best to barter him down for it, is this a good price?

The guy said that it is structurally sound and is also mechanically fine, i know how to spot rust in the usual places but I have no idea how how to spot any mechanical problems apart from if there are noises, so what should I look for and check?

Is there anything else

All help and advice appreciated, oli:)

Difficult to put a price on a Landy without seeing it. I assume it's a tdi? Rot on the chassis is the biggest problem to look out for. Check the bulk head as well and given the mileage I'd be keen to look though any paperwork to see how often it has been serviced.
Mechanically they tend to be pretty strong as long as the usual servicing items have been carried out.

No longer being a youngster I'd have no idea what the insurance would be either?
My son is 11 and is already picking out his first Landy for when he passes his test. Naturally he wants nothing more than 2 years old and it has to be a 110 CSW !!!!!

That sounds a lot of money I paid £1350 a year ago for a 1988 90 pick up with 97k on the clock bog standard from a farmer with a 2.5td

It seems to be in very good condition and I thought that the price wasnt bad compared to the stuff I have seen on ebay, autotrader, piston heads, where else should I look, are the pictures any help and what price should I be looking to get him to?

I paid £3000 for my 1987 LR 90 2.5td. spent about 3grand fixing and doing it up. Its deffo been worth it.

Insurance wise I'd say go with Lancaster Insurance.

hope this helps

I bought my 1987 90 2.5td pickup from the guy in the link as well. ( yanthelandyman in bolton). Paid £3000 for it. so far spent 500 and poss another to go. So long as the bulkhead and chassis are ok, for that price just budget in more for repairs

So is it a reasonable price or not? i am really confused, I think it is worth 3 grand but what do other people reckon and my original question what should i look out for mechanically?:)

Your seller does have a rep for being overpriced. I'd go in with 2k and see where you can meet. If i recall correctly 'wheeler dealers' got 600 off...but he got a load of publicity...personally, if its a 200tdi, i'd say 2200-2500.

He had a few for around the £3000 mark when i bought mine. He has at least 40 in his yard.

So far iv replaced :

radiator, speedo, fitted new exhaust, starter motor, fuel injection pump, upgraded to xenon headlights.

The body work and bulk head were sound n there was no rust in sight.

make sure you kno what you are looking at, i went to look at some at his and they were a mess! £3500 for the most bodged bulkhead i have ever seen. with one poke of a finger and i could see into the footwell from the outside. to be fair the chassis wasnt bad, but it wasnt great. i wouldnt buy off him after seeing that.

I don't think he doeas a lot with any he buys...just sells them on at a profit...which is fair enough :lalala:

Its a case of how much you want to pay and how much he wants to make...

i thought that to be honest, i cherry picked the best one at the time, most of them were rust buckets n full of holes, absolute **** inside n he wanted over 3k for them.

misleads on the ebay pics.

im very happy with mine tho now. Give it some TLC n it will look after you lol. :D
