Who ever you get read the small print, as they dont work for take the policy out then 2 hours later you want recovered to the
other side of the world. I have greenflag.

Cheapest policy that will get you and the car home, don't need homestart and all that crap.
Age of the car will render most policies void, so check max age of vehicle covered.
Avoid aa and rac at all costs.
I use startrescue on my 18yr old d3.

Green Flag. Basic cover, no extras. I have been with them for years, only ever called them out once, so the price has come down over the years. Also covers me in other cars.
Provided I haven't nicked em, of course!

I was with them but never needed, then found out we a covered through our bank for free,
it was G stuart that posted them up years ago it was about £45 me and wife any motor we are in so very good back up even if the recovery took ages still quids in compared with AA/ Rac and the like.

Heard of that before as well. Some people get roadside assist as part of other insurance, house insurance, bank accounts, or credit insurance if the car is leased or on HP.

Been with RAC for years, used them a few times but only ever been any use for a flat battery, otherwise they're crap. Their engineer did help me to push my motorbike once though...

Only 2 companies actually run roadside vehicles for breakdowns, and Recovery trucks for onward travel - the AA and the RAC. All others use local contractors, so the service you get depends on where you are.
Schemes like the banks, insurance companies, internet-only etc mostly bulk-buy AA or RAC packages and sell them on. You contact them, they contact the relevant Big Boy and they contact the local contractor.
As @kevstar said if you try to make an immediate call for recovery - they will charge you. Most have a 48 hour requirement.
Cowboys with wee cars and big trailers abound. Beware!!

I'm with start rescue. Personal cover including home help, which covers bikes as well as cars. ~£85 if i recall

I'm with the RAC because they have no limit on the age of the car for personal cover.

I'm with the AA. Have full cover for my FL. Yer never know where yer could break down so its worth it. As I have never used them I argue the price down or cancel it each year. RAC do specisl deals around the time I renew. Simular for AA. I always go for the big companies as they organise their operations betterer. Used the AA for a work vehicle once.

I'm with the RAC, they jack the price up every year at renewal but a phone call has always got it back down to a sensible level again. At the last renewal the phone call got me 18 months membership for the price of one year. I think they wanted to ensure I stayed with them as the current membership will take me past 50 years as a member. When I first joined (for about a fiver) I could have taken life membership for 50 sovs. That was too much for my wallet in 1974.
