You must have been a Vauxhall fan lol............
It may be not everyone's taste but I managed to get 300bhp out of a 1600cc engine.. not all show & no go :p:D;)

Nah just never been a hot hatch fan of any kind.
I see modded cars and think that looks nice, BUT when they get to a few years old they alwasy end up looking scabby and crap.

I will, but its the other side , just in front of the water pump.....

What about remove the timing cover round inspection plate and have a sniff there just to confirm its not the cambelt?

If thats okay I would remove the alternator and again having a sniff at that, new doesnt always make it right, when alt is off also giving all the pulleys a good spin.

pulleys are all good, I did that yesterday. Todays plan is as you suggest, then poke up the wading plug hole too see what I find. Timing cover won't come away enough to see behind it without pulley removal

So, it turns out you can get the timing cover away a bit without lower pulley removal. No smell from the crack and I think it looks okay.

With the engine cold, you can still smell the smell, so I will change back to the old alternator next week, as I ran out of time today. The wiring looks fine, although its a swine to get back in the sheath!

So, update:

New alternator off, held up to the nose (my nose, not the dogs). No abnormal smell, although it did feel warm after a 2 mile drive home from work.

Pull out the wiring, same procedure, no smell.

Rummage around coolant pipes to find 2 stuck together - the bypass hose and the heater return pipe . Big sniff time, like celeb on cocaine, and it smells!

The return hose is perished, so for about a fiver, I will replace it :)

Nice cheap fixes are always the best

turns out, its a bodge job by the previous owner, what a surprise :)

While the hose thats perished looks separate, its an addition to the main lower coolant hose. This explains the cable tie holding it to the intercooler hose. Moved it away a bit, but a new lower hose will be purchased. Bearmach is £30, so still a win.

Update: set of coolant hoses fitted today. Unfortunately, with the hoses off, the smell is still there :(

Theres not really anything there to be smelly. But heres a pic of the manifold. Leaky? Its bit of a rubbish pic. I've cleaned it all off, so time will tell
