I recently bought a '96 300tdi Auto Disco. A couple of weeks back it started running on 3 cyl's and I found the rocker on no. 4 inlet was broken. I replaced the rocker and was on my way. I noticed it had an intermittent tappet noise that didn't go away after resetting the clearances. The same rocker broke again and I pulled the head off. The valve isn't sticking, so I'm at a loss. The vehicle had very little pull-off power, but went fine once it got into the turbo range. Is this possible that it's a timing issue?

Thanks for that, but 2 different rockers broke on the same valve.....I don't beleive they both stuck. I can't see any marks on the piston, so that's not the issue. Still puzzled!

No I meant the tappet that rides on the cam lobe maybe sticking in the guide/slide in the block.

Next step I think is to remove the valves and check the stems for straightness and check that none of the valve guides in the head are cracked.

For my money it sounds like something in the valve train is sticking.

Hi,
I have a 96 300tdi that broke a rocker, turned out the cam belt was replaced a few months before and had been fitted one tooth out.
Just a thought.

Ok, that all sounds helpful. The cambelt was fitted recently and I found the original crank gear with no "shoulders" was still in there, so the whole kit hadn't been changed as I had been charged for. This brings into question the mechanics professionalism, so could very well be a tooth out. I'll also pull the lobe/slide from the block and check that. Valve guide etc. all looks fine and valve isn't bent.

I havent` broke any rockers but i also get a tapping noise, it gets louder when i rev it, ive had the tappets done and the noise is still there.
Mine also seems a bit slow off the mark but is ok when up to speed.
I cant hardly here the tapping when started from cold.
Have been told it may be the vacuum pump.
It starts fine but i just can`t figure out what it can be, its definately coming from the top of the engine.

The vaccuum pump can deffinately cause a "tappet" noise. What state is your oil pump in....you might also have low oil pressure.

By the way, does anyone know the exact runout measurement on the 300tdi head bolts? I need to check if I can put the old ones back as finding new ones is proving a bit difficult.

Im going to change the manifold gasket today, and have been advised to feel arounD the head gasket to see if there is any blowing.

How can i check the oil pressure.

anyone know where to get these T pieces from? I have been to my local Hydraulics place and they dont recognise the thread .

Or does anyone know what threads they could be - so I can have some made up.

Thanks for the replies, where is the oil pump and the oil pressure switch on a 300tdi.

If the vacuum pump isnt the problem i can look at checking the pressure problem.

Thanks for all the advice. Turns out the timing was out on the camshaft...the "Land Rover Specialist" who put the new timing belt in doesn't even have the 2 special tools required. I did it myself and found the marks he had made to line the camshaft up were a tooth out. Running fine now and VERY quiet now the valves aren't kissing the pistons!
Thanks again
