Broken rocker arms and bent push rods!!

Well the old girl finally bent bang. Two broken rocker arms and two bent push rods were found as soon as I removed the rocker cover. Weird thing is that the timing belt is still ok. I'm guessing the valves have stuck open???

Other major thing is that I am in Fife and live in the Scottish borders, I have had a quote for £300 to tow my car home where I can work on it. Is there any quick fixes to run on 3 cylinders after removing the glow plug?? I know this is not ideall but I have to get home for work, and I can at least try to fix it at home. Towing is so expensinve. Any help much appreciated thanks.

More likely its hydrauliced so no quick fix

you will also have to check that its not stripped any teeth from the belt.

or timing let slipped a few teeth

If your timing belt is still fine, and the timing pins go in like they should, then read carefully.

On top of each valve is a small collet that can, given the right situation, jump loose and will jam istself into the spring of the valve causing the pushrod to bend. Check all the collets are in position

Thanks for the replies. Well got transported home and starting stripping it down last night so far found all the push rods are bent and two rocker arms broken.

My plan today is to get the cover off ad see if the time pins line up and check the condition of the belt. Although turning the crank by hand everything seems to be ok. hoping the timing has just slipped and im only looking at new rods and rocker arms. The valves seem fine to and no marks on the pistons, I guess it helps that the valves etc are square to the piston.

Any thing else to look out for that I might have missed?? Im gutted just flew though her mot now need to get her running again asap. Thanks for any help.

Well stripping down more of the old girl, it appears that half the timing belt has worn away and timing must have skipped hence the bent push rods. At least only to rockers were sacrificed though! Every cloud and all that!

Just writing up my shopping list, its a good job its my birthday next week!

Pistons look in great nick so hopefully the rods etc it will be back on the road again!

Make sure you give the cam followers a good inspection. A mate of mine sorted all his out, 200 miles later the follower gave up the ghost and his engine swallowed a push rod. A lot of work!!

I'm with the AA and think you're covered after 24 hours...it's not much money at the end of the day to know that if the worst comes to the worst you and yours will be taken from one end of the country to the other if needed...

At least you know whats wrong now - and its an engine that is properly REPAIRABLE for a sensible sum,unlike a TD5/TDV6......

Ok ordered all my parts and the mod kit for the timing belt dont want to be here again. As the timing has obviously slipped how do i get everything lined up again? Is it just a case of turning camshaft, flywheel and fuel pump on there own till the timing pins go in? Cheers
