Hello,

I'm a little stuck, i was going to change the hub seal, as it was leaking grease everywhere so decided to do it before it go any worse, anyway went to removed the first caliper bolt using the bi hex 13mm sock on 1/2 ratchet and it snapped clean off about half way down the bolt thread, how can i go about getting it out? can you strip down the caliper to access it or does it need drilling out?

its a defender 90 1995 300tdi (front left had side that has snapped)
Thanks
Howard

it will need drilling if theres not enough to weld a nut or washer to ,undo the other bolt and wheel bearing nuts and remove caliper , you may need to remove swivel as well but worth trying before that

You could always split the calliper and use a set of vice grips on the thread, should come out easy enough now the pressure is off the bolt.

not really its rare they snap ,easily at least ,bolts are encapsulated so shouldnt screw out easily unless its been out a few times before, the point of undoing hub nuts is to let disc move

ok thanks i will give that ago in day light tomorrow. is there a nack to undoing them, just this ridiculously snapped easily.

Some ham fisted mechanic will have over tightened them. Heat should help as it will soften the thread lock.

Pistons should be clean (not rusted and pitted)

As James says, they need a little pressure to push back in, but once they start moving they should move in quite steadily

Thanks for the replies, once I cleaned them up and got then moving they loved a lot more freely, I will grease them up and see how they are. Now just to separate the hub from the discs which might be tricky as they are terrible rusted as and badly warn and put all back together!

Once again thanks for all the help!
